Al Jazeera Cites Auto Industry For Detroit Bureau Opening
Al Jazeera, the Arab-owned international cable and Internet broadcast network, plans to open a news bureau in Detroit, a spokesman for the network's new broadcast channel said Thursday.

The new channel will be called Al Jazeera America and Detroit will among 12 cities across the country where the new channel will have bureaus.

"We expect the channel to be up and operating by September," said Stan Collender, a spokesman for Al Jazeera America.

Collender said Metro Detroit's demographics — the region has one of the largest concentrations of Arabs and Muslims outside the Middle East — did not play a role in its choice as an Al Jazeera bureau.

Collender said the city was selected because it is home to the U.S. auto industry.

Al Jazeera does more honest reporting than any news outlet in america. It's great that they are here. Let's hope that the GOV't doesn't censor them.

great network. i think its the corporations responsible for the censorship in the US, rather than the government. prime example being Top Gear, where Clarkson can drag a manufacturer through the mud verbally, with no sponsors to answer to.

the government may, unfortunately censor some of the atrocities that air on Al Jazeera. When a child gets maimed in Palestine, viewers see it. Al Jazeera has been known to be quite loose with what they broadcast, and thats why they're the best.

I really think Al Jazeera does have it's good points and would be a good addition to American news media. I am just worried about what editorial control the Qatari government will use.
