Next Gen Golf R To Be Less Expensive, Lighter, And Could Top 300HP

The next Volkswagen Golf R could have up to 300bhp, Auto Express can reveal.

An insider told us the new flagship would definitely deliver 20bhp more than the previous 265bhp model, but that the total power output “could even start with a three” – putting the car right up against the new Audi S3.

Yet despite being the hottest Golf ever, the newcomer is likely to be slightly cheaper than before, with prices starting at around £30,000.

Once again, a 2.0-litre turbo engine will drive all four wheels. However, Volkswagen is trying to cut the weight of the 4WD system – the old Golf R was 150kg heavier than the GTI, but the difference is likely to be around 100kg this time round.

Price is too high. For 34 big ones, there are a lot of better options out there if you want a performance vehicle. Mazdaspeed3 for example.

Slap an APR chip and run with Audi R8s and BMW Ms, quite a steal but you could do the same with the top versions of Impreza and Evo :?

An APR chip will run it with the R8 V8 and 1M/M3 level cars. A K04 turbo upgrade with Stage3 and 4 will outrun a lot of supercars. Not deboosting you, not a fanboy, never owned a VW but know people who do...

..keep in mind this is the much older Golf, the new one is only going to be a bigger beast. I personally like Evos for the indestructable engines and the new WRX concept is the first time ever that the Impreza will look good...
