Is The Cayman The Secret Gem In The Porsche Line Up?

It's the worst-kept secret in the automotive world: Porsche doesn't want its midengine Cayman to post better performance numbers than the vaunted rear-engine 911. Correction, Porsche won't let the Cayman drop-kick its bigger, more illustrious brother. Ever.

So when we asked Dr. Martin Constien, team leader for engine development, the difference between the 2014 Porsche Cayman S's 3.4-liter 325-horsepower flat-6 and the base 911's identically sized but 25-hp-lustier mill, he said: "Basically, nothing. They're the same."

"So...why the different power numbers?"

Someone with money to buy a RUF can easily wipe smirks with a Ferrari or Lambo as well. the standard 991 was not meant to compete with such exotics.

The 991 Turbo S on the other hand would not be embarrassed by RUF or Ferrari.

I think the even better secret is how they have been able to sell this coupe for more than the convertible version, by changing the name and throttle body.

if the cayman was a 2+2 i dont think id ever want the 911. the only reason id take the cayman over the 911 is because of price ( cant afford a 911) and as a consolation prize, it is better balanced.
