RUMOR: The BMW M5 Competition Package WILL Make It Into The M6 Too
This week a lot of conversation has centered around the BMW M5 and M6. That's because there's been a ramp up of chatter surrounding the rumored Competition Package.

Until the fat lady sings, this is all merely speculation.

However, there has been a rather serious influx of 550 horspower plus sedans so BMW has to do what it can to further differentiate its offerings in the market. Thus, the newfound option, the Competition Package.

While BMW has offered a Competition Pack on previous M3s, the reality is the brand has never really been a fan of providing horsepower bumps in form of packages.

If this does, in fact, happen here's what you can expect according to what we're hearing:

- Power bump of approximately 15 hp, probably a few torques too
- Competition Pack-specific suspension
- New M steering wheel
- New 20-inch wheels, probably lightweight
- New sport exhaust system with black chrome tips
- Increased top speed

The BIG news now is that this package will find its way into the M6 lineup, which now includes the coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe.

Once it's official, we'll be sure to make sure you're the first to know.

BMW isn't trying to differentiate its offerings in the market. The M5 and M6 desperately need the competition package to *try* to keep up with Audi's RS6 and RS7.

The RS6 can do this (the lighter RS7 might be faster):

Already Audi's S6 won a three car comparo with the last place M5 in Car and Driver mag testing (see link) -- thus the RS6 doesn't need to do much to remain superior to the M5. The S6 was already shown to be faster than the M5 in O-30 mph acceleration. And the S6 is as fast as the M5 in 0 to 60 mph acceleration, and only 0.2 sec behind the M5 in the quarter mile. The S6 has the 420 hp version of the same engine in the RS6, which has been retuned to about 560 hp.

Unfortunately for BMW's competition packaged M5/M6, Audi is already planning an RS6 Plus and RS7 Plus with about 600 hp, given the capability and possibilities with the new engine.

Even if the M5 is equipped with competition package, both the RS6/RS7 and RS6/RS7 Plus will probably be faster on the Nurburgring track.
