OUCH! TTAC Calls It Like It Is: The Acura ILX Is Just A Modern Day Infiniti G20

A few weeks ago, I posted an article entitled “Cars That Look Good But Aren’t.” I thought this was a particularly brilliant piece of writing, primarily because virtually every word was spelled correctly. After finishing it, I patted myself on the back and said “Good job, Doug.” Then I got in my Nissan Cube and shielded my face from passersby.

But it wasn’t long before the hate mail started coming in.

In fact ILX looks reasonably nice. It just rides on wrong platform, as Honda always does.

The G20 is the better car.

This ILX is what the Civic should have been.

The G20 was indeed a good car. The ILX is not bad.

There is a big difference in those two statements...

The Acura should have waited and put in an Earth Dreams engine and tranny into the ILX...for now, the ILX represents a poor value in relation to its considerably cheaper platform-mate the Civic; the larger, more refined, and only slightly more expensive Acura TSX that it presumably will eventually replace; and the larger, more efficient Accord.

It's caught between a rock, a hard place, and a cliff...way to go Acura (Honda corporate from Japan pulled the strings no doubt) product planners!!!

So, wait. Isn't the G20 just Infiniti's attempt at modeling the initial Acura model structure (in addition to their J model which was based on the Maxima) ? Acuras were initially based on their Honda counterparts before Infiniti was ever a brand in the US. Honda/Acura just continued the tradition. And, yes, the ILX isn't that bad, just horrible powertrain combos offered the first year, which Acura is supposedly fixing.

oops meant "…attempt at following the initial Acura model structure".

Follow their model structure? Probably. Offer a flagship then rebadge lesser models they make around the world: Primera=G20
