BOON OR BUST? BMW i3 Electric To Retail For About $40,000

The price of the five-door compact will be set closer to the launch of the vehicle late this year.

The i3 will have an optional two-cylinder, 0.65-liter gasoline motorcycle engine and an auxiliary generator that charges the battery. Willisch did not indicate what the price might be for that version of the car.

did you really expect a BMW fully carbon fiber electric car to cost less than a prius?

They need to make money on these cars--not just the pure cost of manufacture but also recoup some of the R&D cost.

If it costs close to a 3 series it will sell very well. Prius, volt, leaf can all cost into the 30s, but with the i3 being much more premium, and advanced, it will not e a hard sell.
