Could A 3 Cylinder BMW Ever Live Up To The
Not even BMW’s legendary M division is exempt from the industry trend of downsizing engines – at least, in terms of capacity and cylinder count, as output levels continue to rise. For the M5 and M6, BMW replaced the old V10 with a twin-turbo V8, and for the upcoming M3, it’s ditching the V8 for a forced-induction six. So what’s next for Munich’s performance department? If it put out 250hp at 7,000rpm in a car weighing less than 2,500lbs with great handling...sure. Otherwise no thank you.

BMW's M GmbH long maintained all-wheel drive had no place in its performance vehicles. It also said turbos were the "easy" or "cheap" way to achieve performance while swearing by the naturally-aspirated route.

At present day we have both X5M and X6M all-wheel drive SUVs and a twin-turbo V8 M3.

BMW has obviously changed course and sold vehicles with traits that were once at odds with its M performance philosophy.

BMW will have no choice as rules, EPA regulations, and competitors vehicles force BMW's M division to create segments and performance characteristics that must be addressed.

With BMW's new engine line BMW stated they can get up to 200hp per liter, so 300hp+ 1.5 liter 3 cylinder would be awesome in a 1M or M2.

Hell, if a 2 cylinder can move the car 0-60 in under 5 seconds, sign me up.
