Good Or Bad? GM Wants To Have Advertisements In Future Infotainment Systems
Dan Akerson is pushing General Motors Co (GM.N) to build cars that the U.S. automaker's top executive hopes will attract a target demographic: his grandkids.

"I have grandchildren that have only grown up in a world with smartphones," Akerson, a former telecommunications executive, said on a conference call on Thursday to discuss GM's quarterly results.

An emerging generation of tech-savvy consumers has changed the way GM and its rivals approach in-car entertainment and navigation systems. If done well, these systems can draw new buyers and allow automakers to tap new sources of revenue and boost profit margins.

if there were ads in my nav/ICE screen, that would seriously be reason enough for me to not buy a GM. Worst. Idea. Ever.

This is what passes for intelligence and innovation at GM.

Actually GM kind of already has that, it is called OnStar. It collects and sells your "user data".

I don't like the idea, I don't like GM cars, and I don't like saying this BUT I think it will happen. Having spent 11 yrs living abroad and now back in the States, I'm surprised at the increasingly prevalent if not overwhelming marketing messages on a daily basis. I think cars is just another way to deliver those marketing messages, unfortunately.

I am ok with ad supported 4G service as long as it is going to be free. If I have to pay, I'll pass.
