REVIEW: Audi A6 4.2- Is it all that it's cracked up to be?

The styling is a step forward, not that the A6 needed a whole lot of improving. The application of the new family fascia treatment, squared-off taillights and less bubbly-looking body really make the new model stand out. The body flows effortlessly over big wheels, the styling is low-slung and penned in an elegant yet powerful way that exudes both muscle and brains at the same time. The visual brunt of this car screams power and authority, commanding a great deal of respect. If you went to Burger King in your A6 and ordered a Big Mac, I'll bet you'd get one.

Car & Driver just completed a long term test of the V-6 version of this car. They were really pleased with it! The only major complaint that they had was that the car "drove like an overweight Camry."

My father has one; it's not slow at all.
He has also the Sport Suspension on it.
It is a great car to drive and handles very well.
The engine is way above average.
The 4.2 is just awesome; the high pitch sound of the engine (from S4; and from RS4 for 2007 models) is just awesome.
Too bad they are hard to get.

The only A6's I don't like are the FWD versions. It feels akward driving a powerful turbodiesel with FWD - yes, they torque steer.

I drove an A6 2.0 TDI in Europe (rental) and it was an amazing car. Lovely handling, sporty and yet reasonably comfortable (better than my E39 530i) and fun to drive. And this was a base diesel with 150-hp I believe. The only problem was when you gunned it in first gear, it torque-steered. If you drive the same car with Quattro, it would be perfect. I like A6, I really do.

Oh, and I just found out that a base model A8 V6 in Europe is also FWD!

quattro is usually an option here, our weather isn't extreme enough and fwd isn't a big problem.
if i lived in austria awd would be better though.
i don't think the a8 non-quattro sells very well, it is only on the 3.0 petrol, rest are quattro.
the a4 cab 3.2 is fwd as standard, quattro an option.
one thing, in the uk we don't get 4matic or xdrive on any non-suvs.
if you need awd, a subaru or a vw group car, those are the choices.
it's why compact crossovers are very popular, as even the utility bit isn't needed, never mind the off-roading bit.

the 550 is a great car but you can't say a 4.2 S line with FSI motor is bland/ The 550 is good and the 4.2 is good
