THIS IS IT! The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Is HERE But Is Its Interior Still Too Old Man-ish?
The day has finally come. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been completely revealed for the very first time and we're getting an in-depth look at it. There's tons of new information about the all-new luxury sedan. We wouldn't expect anything less from such a critical benchmark in the top class.

Note that the interior matches exactly what we saw when a spy snapped images and we ran them months ago. Unfortunately, we had to remove the images because they were too good and Mercedes didn't like that.

But I'll reiterate what I said then. My first impressions of the interior were that it appears to have received some upgrades in the materials. Everything looks well thought out and it's a pretty impressive place to be; however, there is one problem for me.

It looks like such an old man's car.

The two gigantic screens are integrated very similar to a late 1980s car trying to be futuristic — with one gigantic hump in the dash. I can't seem to grasp why Mercedes would invest in a TFT panel for the instrument cluster then make the "dials" exactly as how they'd appear had it not used a TFT display.

Probably the biggest sour points for me are the two-spoke steering wheel and the circular air vents that look as though they're lifted from Bentley. I don't know if its possible to make an uglier steering wheel between this and the unfortunate wheel in the Aston Martin Lagonda.

Does the interior look like a nice place to be chauffeured in. Yes, I'll give it that. But when I compare this interior to what currently exists in the Porsche Panamera and Audi A8, I am not all that blown away.

What say you, Spies?

Gilding the lily.

The interior is fine and completely fulfills the expectations of its target market. It's an "old man's car" for heaven's sake. Young dudes are not taking such a large car for a spin, are they? Wouldn't they rather take an E63, M5 or RS? If you're buying something this big, you're already committed to that look, so the interior as long as it's classy, is an afterthought. It's classy, done.

Just as I noted in the other article about this. Dash looks terrible, steering wheel style is old and the big knobs scream "older" generation. I will stick with my BMWs and Audis. Exterior looks good but I won't be buying one of these, because they'll be putting me in a retirement home.

Newsflash: Old men have the same tastes as you. Sorry to see Autospies editors have an age and gender bias. That's REALLY old fashioned.

Gauge and nav screen area reminds me of early 90s Buicks

This car is not only supposed to replace the current S class but also Maybach. So depending on the modelit also needs to compete with Rolls and Bentley. The 280/300SEL sedans from the 60's and early 70's had this same kind of stately style. Jaguar also had it up until the previous XJ.
Yes the interior is a bit "old man" but it's old man rich in the style of Bentley and Rolls harks a bit back to the high end Mercedes 600 that was produced from the late 60's until 1991. Ultra modern style has never really fit well on the S class in my opinion. If your going to spend $80 to $150 grand having the Nintendo "Game Boy" dash look is simply not appropriate. Old money luxury lots of leather, chrome, and wood veneer. A high end luxury car should have the feel of a British Pub. Why do you think Maybach failed. It had Garish luxury like a Lear Jet.It simply did not translate. This new car is bringing this quality back. I don't like the the japanese style ehad and tail lamps and I dislike the large infotainment system. It should be hidden in the dash like the Rolls Phantom. otherwise there is more wood, round vents that pay homage to Rolls and Bentley, the long hood with the more upright grill. This is where the S class belongs in styling, the poor mans German Rolls Royce and Bentley.

Look at how many Tesla Model S' have sold. People love high-tech instrument clusters/dashes.

Some do. I don't. I cant stand the high tech Tesla dash.
I prefer a more stately dash ala RR Bentley. I get enough tech in my office all day. The last thing I want for my relaxing ride home is that shit computer screen in my car.

No, it doesn't look like a Panamera or A8 or 7 Series interior. You want to know why? Because it's Mercedes. And it's Mercedes' über popular and über successful S-Class. The S-Class where no one was screaming for a more sporty interior. Frankly, no one was really screaming for a new model at all.
Clearly Mercedes was going for a classical, elegant look, mixed with new technology. Looking at the "Mercedes Benz" script on the bottom of the steering wheel should tell that to anyone with two eyes.

Looks like the wrap around, door to door, spaceship "shelf" dash from my 1995 Supercharged Buick Riviera !? Oh well
