The Number One Car in America

Hmmm....wonder if any other brands out there including the German Band Wagon or people wagon from VW sold that much, nope. Just from the Camry alone, since 1980 it has sold more than 10 millions. And in the U.S. more than 6.5 millions and I wonder why?

Sales determine how well a car sells, not how good the car is. If you think that everyone who buys a Camry knows something about cars, you would be dead wrong.

An example:

"So, Grandpa Jones, why did you buy a Camry? Did you like the styling? Did you find the handling quite capapable for a car of this size?"

"No, it was priced right and had a big trunk"

OMG, it must be a flippin' good car then!

Speaking of Toyota, Jeremy Clarkson was once asked what was the worst job he ever had.

"Road-testing the Toyota Corolla" he said.

With such positive feedback, you wonder why Toyota doesn't sell a zillion Corolla's a year....

The Camry was specifically designed for the US market, of course it will be a success. The VW Beetle was designed for Europe, and exported to the US as a means of cashing in. European cars are also pricier than their Japanese counterparts in the US, of course they won't sell as much.

Speaking of which, we need more European cars in America. I'd love to see Seat, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot or Lancia here. Cars with style and emotion. Let's face it, the Camry, Accord and Sonata aren't very exciting cars. I realize that buyers of these cars have low priorities when it comes to automotive design emotion etc. and are usually more concerned with VALUE. I for one couldn't stand driving a Camry, Accord etc. Too generic, boring, lifeless... good car, but not for me.

M53R, wow i can't believe you have the stones to call the world's #1 family passenger car boring. What do you want them to do, make a friggin turbo package? If they exaggerated the styling or "pimped it out" that would kill the definition of a family sedan. It's not supposed to be flashy, it's supposed to get the job it was designed to do done, which it absolutely does.

The is boring and it is supposed to be like that. The Corolla may not drive well but it sells well. Yes these cars are not the best, far from it, but they get the job done.

I would also like to see Alfa Romeo in the US,I don't know about the others.

We need a car like the Lancia Thesis (http://www.lanciathesis.com/eng/home.html) It's totally different than 100% of the cars, trucks, and SUV's out there. None of the U.S, European, and Asian companies have been bold enough.

Many completely different cars have been sold in different parts of the world under the Corolla drand, it is different from the Golf which has sold slightly less but it one car sold in many parts of the world. According to BMW freaks, the Camry is the greatest car EVAR, and the Ford F-150 is the GOAT of automobiles because it has sold the most in the U.S. Logical, VW makes much more money than BMW.

i always thought the camry was boring looking, even though reliability and yada yada. but seeing the new one with the skirts and dual exhaust, i actually couldnt believe that it looked pretty decent.

It most certainly is the most dull, underwhelming car I have ever driven. Clumsy in its styling, coarse engine note, stodgy handling, cheap-feeling interior, not even very comfortable.

It's an Anti-car. Toyota had a list of everything that makes people love cars, and they threw it in the fire.

I don't care how well it sells in America, I don't care if it's a family car or not, it's completely mediocre and doesn't even deserve to be argued about.

In Europe, Toyota sells about 1 Camry a year because European buyers are more clued up.

So here's the deal: All you Toyota-nannies who bleat on about value and reliability can do one good thing for the Autospies community: Admit that you aren't enthusiastic about cars.

Because I consider myself passionate, and the last time I drove a Camry, I actually laughed out loud in response to how it drove.

The new camry is awesome it deserves to be number 1 although Tyota must fix it's transmision i've heard alot of bad things about it

The new Camry is a huge improvement over the previous generation. Great value, good quality, and now some distinctive styling. I'm glad that it sells so well so my German cars stand out in a crowd better!

The Camry is a nice car, does it put a smile on your face while taking a corner fast? Only if you consider body roll and squeeling tires funny.....but it's not meant for that. Neither is the Accord or any other car in that segment. Some people don't care about driving performance, they want a nice soft ride with reliability that can get them safely from point A to point B in comfort while getting decent gas mileage. It's not a car for everybody, that is why they make sportier models. If you're looking for a great drive, chances are you aren't considering the Accord or the Camry. If you have 2.5 kids and just want to get around, it "gets the job done", and pretty well. It's not a sports coupe, it's a family sedan. And no, not "sports sedan" Get it straight.

Camry- is a solid car for the masses. They hit their target dead on. But due in the same vain by making it so generic for the masses, they stripped it of all personality and individuality. Kinda reminds me of the kids song “Old MacDonald had a Farm”, “here a Camry, there a Camry, everywhere a Camry”

I'm not really for or against the new Camry. But what I can't argue against is public opinion/concensus because there is definitely weight here. (broken record about to begin) The US car market is no doubt the largest and most competitive. It is also a market that puts both new and used cars through more analysis, critical review both professional and informal in forums, comparison reviews, long-term studies, and then publishes all this information for public consumption than any other nation in the world. These things are uniquely American when taken as a whole.

If you make cars then put it to the test is the US because no where else IMHO is there such an obsession, daily constant use that forms positive or negative impressions, and critical judgement of the merits, worthiness, and character of a car. Being rated the number car in this market after going through a barrage of tests time and again speaks volumes.

I have read sometimes the comment about US buyers being uninformed or lacking passion in cars. That person is probably not American (which is ok) and just doesn't know what kind of information flows/inundates in this country.

mathew, not only do you insult the number one selling brand in america, you have to insult the americans when you it comes to the more "clued" europeans. lol jeezus. Yes, i believe the old camry's were a bit "bleh" but this new one deserves to get some attention. exactly how well does a passat or a jetta handle when it comes to corners...probably the same!...for more money of course and less options

I've been reading this thread, and I think the essence of the issue is not whether Camry is boring and whether we need or we don’t need cars from EU. What I am reading between lines is the fact that we Americans simple don't care for refinement, exclusivity, design, "pleasant to eye" experience. Our bottom line is value-for-the-money and that is where our "refinement" stops. And that is true not just when wee look at car design. Just look around and notice the way we, average Americans, dress and compare to average Europians. Our styles are so outdated, it is embarrassing. I noticed that shoes men wear has been more than decade out of style..even details like sunglasses, briefcases, watches, hairstyle, just name it…It seems that good taste and care for refinement becomes privilege of upper class Americans .I have been traveling a lot throughout Europe and believe me, I can recognize American tourist 100 feet away. I wish we change and start caring for things that are pleasant to eye even if that means driving Lancia Thesis or Alfa Romeo… lets not allow our culture to go decadent path…
