Upcoming M4 Coupe To Feature Twin Turbo Inline 6 With 8000+ RPM Redline And 100 More FT-LB Of Torque
Nearly a month ago, we spotted the first non-black F82 M4 coupe prototype (in Silverstone) on the road (reposted below). We've just spied a Silverstone F82 M4 testing on the Nurburgring, wearing M Carbon Ceramic Brakes. This prototype doesn't reveal any new physical details, but we do have a new technical detail to share.

We were recently told by a high-ranking BMW M official intimately familiar with M3/M4 development that the engine powering the M3/M4 will feature a nearly 8000 RPM redline. As we've reported all along, the M3/M4's S55 engine will be an inline 6 cylinder with mutiple turbos, outputting around 100 lb-ft more torque and approximately same horsepowers as the current M3 (S65) engine. For comparison, the current M3 engine redlines at 8400 RPM.

It's been confirmed it will weigh close to 300lbs less than the outgoing model. So it should be the lightest piggy in the class.

Also "nearly 8000" in the article means it will be around 7900 or just under 8000, not over. Still impressive and relatively high for a turbo motor. Only turbo car I can think of that revs higher is the mclaren, and that's over $200k.

Piggy? It will weigh the same or less than the E46 M3. I don't remeber anyone calling the E46 a pig.

LOL@ "lightest piggy in the class". Nice, witty comeback.

I have a feeling this M4 will be a beast….and I can't wait to see and hear it.

It sounds good on paper but will it drive as good as it sounds? Unfortunately, the answer to that question recently, for BMW at least, is "No."

The BMW M5 and M6 have amazing stat sheets as well but that hasn't translated into a highly engaged, lithe, and communicative driving experience.

The M3/M4 are BMW's last attempts to save their entire "M" line from detachment.

For pure driver entertainment and fun go with the new M2 which should be a hooligan hot rod that generates more smiles per mile in real world driving !
