One of the world's most celebrated super cars has undoubtedly been the Audi R8. In the history of sports cars, we have to admit that the R8 is a helluva first crack for the four rings. Remember, it's the brand's first super car — granted, it could be considered a product of the larger Volkswagen Auto Group, who owns Lamborghini and Bugatti.

The hallmarks of the R8 are simple: it's easy to look at, with an excellent and forward-thinking exterior design which is complemented by a high quality interior.

Oh, and its reliability has been considered bulletproof by owner's we've spoken to. You can't exactly say the same for many Italian exotica.

But if you've ever had the chance to behind the wheel of an R8 you know damn well that its standout quality is its ability to be driven like a daily driver. With a compliant suspension and all the positives of an exotic, it does everything you want on command.

Of course it wasn't perfect. The V8 feels a bit lazy at low RPMs and it's automatic gearbox felt very archaic with its clunky shifts. You really had to learn to feather the throttle or else be prepared for a miserable experience.

Now armed with a freshened look, a new transmission and more enhancements for 2014 it seems like the R8's back with a vengeance.

Last Friday was the Sport Auto Tuner GP -- a competition where the racecars must be nominated by a tuner company. Cars can compete in 17 classes.

The MTM R8 achieved the fastest lap time of 1:06.695 at this year's Tuner GP on the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg track. Second fastest was a Komo Tec Lotus Exige (1:08.723). Third was Rothe Motorsport VW Golf VI R (1:09.082)

In comparison, the fastest Nissan GT-R took 1:09.620 (five Nissan GT-R cars represented four different tuners, but only one Audi R8 competing).

The Audi R8's time of 1:06.695 would be the second fastest time recorded on this race track, which also hosts the Formula One German Grand Prix.

Incidentally, the Donkervoort D8 RS -- which is equipped with an Audi engine -- made its 1:04.80 record lap at the 2006 Tuner GP at Hockenheimring. This is one fast car. It had set the Nurburgring lap record for a production car in 2004 and 2005, but has since been eclipsed by a few other cars.

so you're comparing a tune Audi R8 to a stock Nissan GT-R? I would like or love to see a stock Audi R8 beat a Nissan stock 2014 Nissan GT-R on the Nurburgring.

You must be upset that the Hockenheim lap records show that:
- the tuner MTM R8 (1:06.69) blew off the lap time of the stock Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package (1:09.50)
- the $445,000 stock Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package (1:09.50) was virtually identical to the $193,000 Audi R8 GT (1:09.60) -- both cars were driven by supercar tester Horst von Sauma.
- the stock Audi R8 GT (1:09.60) was faster than the stock Nissan GT-R (1:09.94). The GT-R was driven by another driver.

Expert supercar tester Horst von Sauma has supertested all three cars at both Hockenheim and Nurburgring (both tracks share the hosting of the Formula 1 German Grand Prix):
- At Hockenheim, Horst von Sauma was able to drive the 2009 stock Audi R8 GT (1:09.60) faster than he was able to drive the 2010 stock Nissan GT-R (1:10.00). Later he test drove a 2012 stock GT-R with extra 20 HP but the time was marginally slower (1:10.10).
- At Hockenheim, von Sauma drove the $193,000 Audi GT (1:09.60) almost as fast he was able to drive the top-of-the-line $445,000 Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package (1:09.50)
- At Nurburgring, von Sauma was able to drive the 2009 stock Audi R8 GT (7:34 min) faster than he was able to drive the 2010 stock Nissan GT-R (7:36 min).
- At Nurburgring, von Sauma drove the $193,000 Audi GT as fast he was able to drive the top-of-the-line $445,000 Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package (7:34 min).
Horst von Sauma is considered an expert Nurburgring driver and supercar tester (he has set several Nurburgring fastest lap records over the years).

Don't worry, later this year a new 600 HP Audi R8 GT will be introduced that will smoke your Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package. But two Audi R8 GT will still be cheaper than one overpriced Lexus LFA Nurburgring Package.

Looks almost identical to the 'old' R8 but now it has a set of BMW alloy wheels on it!
