Is The 2014 BMW X5 Different Enough From The Outgoing X5? We Compare Designs Head-To-Head
Yesterday marked the introduction of an all-new BMW X5. In its third generation, the X5 is one of BMW's top sellers. In other words, BMW cannot afford to mess this one up. And, from what we're seeing now that the vehicle has done the fully monty, we're pretty sure BMW couldn't of messed it up.
That's because BMW played it safe. REALLY safe.
How so, you ask? Well, we decided to take shots of a 2011 X5 and put them right next to the all-new pictures released today. Now you can see exactly how the all-new X5 is different from the outgoing product.
Clearly the 2014 BMW X5 is an evolution rather than a revolution. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it is an interesting move as BMW has been a brand that's been pushing boundaries in the past 10 years.
That said, we want you to weigh in. Take a look at the shots below and let us know:
is the all-new X5 different enough from the outgoing X5? Is its exterior and interior styling a welcome surprise or a letdown?

What a lazy redesign, basically a elongated X1. Even the interior looks 90% the same from the gen 2! What a disappointment, since the E53 and E70 always seemed to look better and more uniform in design than the competition.

This third generation X5 looks like a dud. BMW is relying on its brand image to sell this X5 a la Bulging Eyes: this dated design is a rehash of the unimaginative second generation X5 that was aimed at buyers with little sense of art and beauty. Maybe for the fourth generation X5, BMW will hire Pininfarina again to design the X5 'Grand LAsso'.
The first generation X5 (E53, 1999 - 2005) was more attractive relative to that era.

"you could ask the same question about Porsche's 911" - true, but then the 911 is an icon. The X5, and 98%-99% of the cars out there for that matter, are not. Having said that, I'm not the one who always clamor for newer and different cars every 4-5 years and actually like to see that my car doesn't go out of fashion so quickly but I think the thumbs-downer out there like to see a fresh new face to compete in the evermore competitive market.

it is an icon. It changed the game. Every "SUV" now tries to be sporty like the X5. Range rover had to change, porsche had to come out with the cayenne because they saw how nice the X5 handled. Audi had to give the horribly handling Q7 a sporty look to seem sporty.
So yeah, it changed the game. iconic.

I was the first one to comment on the other BMW X5 article with the following response:
"What a dud and people claim Audi's models don't change from year to year. What the hell is the difference between this "All-New" X5 and the current generation??"
The pictures above show how little has changed. In fact, I needed to do a double-take to spot the differences between pictures 1 and 2, 6 and 7, 9 and 10.
The rear lights are a total disaster on this "all-new" BMW X5.
Most importantly, the X3 and X5 now look almost identical.

I will concede that I do like the new grille. Much more aggressive than previous.
But that C-D pillar area is really not good. Even though it's nearly identical to the previous model, the chrome surrounds just accentuates how sloppy its execution is.

BMW's version of Q7. BMW have ruined X5 name and classic shape/proportions. Should have named it X7 or something. From Side looks like a van. Too longish. Front end is a mess and rear end is an elongated version of much cheaper X1. Interior is better than the outgoing car though but nothing new. Very Disappointed.

Spot on Jugnu! Slightly nicer interior, the rest is a bit boring. I liked the second gen and had a X5 xDrive 35d but not impressed with this. Rear is a big step back and the front and side are stuck in neutral.

Look at how the "all-new" BMW X5 looks almost identical to the BMW X1.

Agree. I am also disappointed that the rear wiper did not move underneath the rear spoiler like the one on the Range Rover to improve aerodynamics and clean up the back.
Anyways, I had fun with my E53, which now does look dated, but over a decade ago it was a head turner. C'est la vie.

I like the fact that the new 2014 X5 looks more like a Mercedes than the outgoing X5. Guess that is what BMW calls evolution.

Well, if there is an SUV that looks like a van, that's the Q7. Uninspired, bland, tries too hard to look premium and totally misses on ruggedness.
I'm not saying I loved the new X5, I was expecting a more daring look, but it still has that ruggedness that I expect from a premium SUV, like the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. could look better? Yes. It is still a great SUV? Certainly.

A s usual, Audi defeated BMW in the comparison tests.
- German mag Auto Motor und Sport: Audi Q7 (first place) defeats BMW M5, Mercedes ML, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg.

- Car and Driver compare: Audi Q7 3.0T (first place) defeats BMW X5 xDrive35i, Acura MDX, Land Rover LR4 HSE and Lexus GX460
C&D gave the Audi Q7 9 out of 10 for exterior styling: “the Q7’s size gave Audi’s design team room to create sleek sculpture. It was the same story inside: an elegant harmony of subdued colors, rich materials, and superb seats, as well as exceptionally quiet operation.”
