CAR WARS! Will The All-New Range Rover Sport Give The 2014 BMW X5 Some Trouble When It Comes To A Face Off?
When I first saw the all-new 2014 BMW X5 in spy shots, the first thing I thought was simple: "OK so BMW is going to do some really light changes for the all-new vehicle." Overall, the shape stays the same and minor updates would include the facade and rear end. There's a saying for the third-gen X5:
"If you loved the second-gen X5, you'll love the third-gen X5."
That's not necessarily a bad thing; however, BMW did play this one safe much like it did when it completely overhauled the 7-Series a couple of years back. It's an incremental improvement but it's certainly not cutting edge or groundbreaking.
And while BMW isn't the first brand to try this methodology out in a redesign — THINK: Porsche 911 and Range Rover — I can't help but look at the all-new Range Rover Sport and feel more lustful for it. And when I look at the all-new flagship Range Rover, there's no question I would be skipping the all-new X5.
That said, I wanted to take your temperature and see what YOU think:
which would YOU choose? The 2014 BMW X5 or 2014 Range Rover?

How so? Both will base high 50s, low 60s, both are built to be used on road — Range Rover's flagship is a different story.
Buyer's shop with their wallet and for cachet.

It makes perfect sense that they would be cross-shopped, with the exception of the BMW's available 3rd row.
Based on reviews for the RR, I think the Sport is going to be so good. Style-wise, it's an easy no-brainer: RR Sport. Inside and out, it trounces the BMW plus the fact that you see an RR and you know it's an LR product. And it won't hurt if the Sport is mistaken for the RR. However, if you see the X5, you could easily confuse it for the X3, which isn't necessarily a flattering thing.
Performance-wise, it's going to be interesting to see. I think LR has made great strides with their product line, but BMW still has the expertise in dynamic driving.

The new RRs are looking modern and ooze with status where the X5 seems more pedestrian. I've never been a huge RR fan until the current design and would one, the huge weight loss as a part of the redesign of both RR sport and RR is just impressive

I wouldn't have cross-shopped these, but since other feel they would I thought I'd check them both. After selection of my preferred options (RR Sport HSE with options, X5 w/diesel) I came to $66k for the X5 and almost $80k for the RR. That's a big chunk of change. I could afford the RR, but couldn't justify the price difference. Especially since I would prefer a diesel engine.

NO ONE truly cross-shops these, the RR Sport ALWAYS started out a good $10-15k higher base, and optioned out it gets even farther apart.

People don't usually cross-shop these two vehicles. The Range Rover Sport will be a good $10-15K more expensive than the BMW X5 when optioned.
With that said, buyers will probably go for the Range Rover.
Range Rover is a more exclusive brand than BMW as a whole and with the re-design many people could easily confuse the Range Rover Sport for the flagship Range Rover, a pretty nice mixup for the Range Rover Sport buyer.
Conversely, BMW has gone further downmarket with its SUV lineup by introducing the X1 compact SUV. Unfortunately, the "all-new" BMW X5 looks very much like the significantly cheaper BMW X1 from the rear and the rear tail lights have been a turn-off for many prospective buyers based on initial reactions.

amg has it right. for the price of a loaded V8 X5, you're in the V6 rover. when equipped the same, they are at lease $15k apart. furthermore, the majority of X5 sales are the twin turbo inline 6--and those typically go out the door in the high $50s/low $60s from a base price of under $50k. the rover STARTS in the high $60s.

Selling - X5 35 definitely out sell RRS - Lower price, usually more discounts, brand position more known to the public (you'll be surprised how many Chinese would choose Mercedes and BMW over any other brand)
Performance - X5 35 slight win over RRS - 0 to 60 X5 is 0.5 sec faster, top speed about the same, but RRS has air suspension so cornering battle should be interesting
Styling - RRS because this new X5... it looks like a face-lift. The panorama roof on RRS is a must have.
Technology - I think RRS has more under the belt
Off-roading - Definitely the RRS
I would buy a RRS for the modest premium

technology? The BMW has WAAAAY more. The nav is so much better in the BMW. bigger screen, more smart phone enhancements. how about the major advancements in the night vision even for the BMW. I could go on forever.
The X5 35i that you are comparing to the RR sport is not near the same price point. Get the X5 50 that will be much quicker than the range and still less expensive. Also, the free maintenance isnt bad.

2ndbimmer, bmw aint bad, but I played around with the tech on my 2013 535i, the navi is good but it is same navi found in audi a6. The night vision head up display pretty nice... but audi has it too... rrs has surround camera, parallel auto steer, terrain response 2... a wading depth to the door handle... full air suspension. I think for a SUV my choice is obvious. if you go add the packages and options to a X5 35 on bmwusa the price between them within 5K... so like I said for the modest premium I get the rrs. If I really want tech, the new s class has an air freshner which is the best tech ever.

If you spec up a X5 4.0d M sport with the standard kit you get on the RRS HSE they come in around the same price with the RRS looking good value when you way up you cant get full air suspension on the X5. I had both of these cars in the old model and would say the X5 was bigger in side and ran rings round the RRS on road. What car this month has just commented that the new RRS out handles the new X5 as BMW has softened it up so it looks like RRS this time for me looks a lot more plusher and I dont like how BMW are making their cars ride nowadays even the sport models have very light steering and soft suspension not what they used to be
