POSER? What Defines A TRUE Car Guy?
After reading an interesting take from Adam Carolla, a self proclaimed car guy, I have to say it is an interesting perspective. That's mainly because I've always doubted his car guy worthiness until I saw his amazing collection a couple of years back.

The thing is though he doesn't drive these cars that are essentially a secret. Carolla claims he doesn't want the attention, they'll break and crazy Los Angeles drivers are to blame.

These are all valid points but in the words of Jim Glickenhaus, owner of many rare autos — namely P4/5: "Not putting miles on your Ferrari is like not having sex with your girlfriend so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend."

Sure, Jim is talking about folks trying to keep value but I think the shoe, more or less, fits.

Then there is a collection of gearheads that believe if you don't "wrench" on your car you're a complete sissy. Is this also true?

What say you, Spies? What defines a TRUE car guy?

People are always asking me why I don’t drive the cars in my collection, especially one of my Lamborghini Miuras. Now, Jay Leno is the most famous car collector out there. And he’s also known for actually driving the cars in his collection. If you spend enough time in Burbank, you WILL see Jay puttering down the street in a Stanley Steamer. His attitude is that you have to drive your cars. Supposedly, every car in his collection is ready to be taken for a spin at a moment’s notice.

I’m the exact opposite of this, and here’s why. If you drive a Miura or some other flashy car on the street, people will look at you. And I don’t like the attention. I know that sounds crazy coming from a comedian who has spent the last 20 years making his living in front of a camera or a microphone. Wanting to be the focus of attention while performing is one thing. Wanting to be the focus of attention while driving to the hardware store is something else entirely, and it’s not in my DNA, believe it or not...

A true car guy defined in my book:

1. Appreciates all brands, not just one
2. Can accept the fact some cars appeal to some owners even if you don't understand it.
3. Knows enough to be technical in a discussion
4. Can wrench if needed on some aspects of a car (not that they do it on a regular basis)
5. Understand he doesn't know everything about anything

I think this is a pretty good standard.

The truest car guy I ever knew was a friend who loved to purchase and maintain late 1960's Lotus Elans. He could keep them running with spit and duct tape and drove them with the top down all year round. He was also 6'2" and about 300lbs. Don't ask, I have no idea how he fit.

You sort of have to be a car enthusiast to nurse back Lotus'. And to MacGyver it? Pretty cool.

Someone who loves even just the one car, not the idea or image of being with or in it. An emotional connection with a 'thing'.

Then you know what it's like to be a carguy.

He talks about what he owns and doesn't drive...how about what he does drive and how does he drive it?
