Audi New R8 GT Caught Testing At Nurburgring
Undisguised prototype spied at the Nurburgring could be an updated R8 GT or a GT variant of the new R8 V10 Plus.

The mysterious Audi R8 GT spied at the Ring last year has reared its pretty ahead again, with these latest spy shots revealing the GT variant of its flagship model is next in line for a refresh as part of facelifting the R8 range for 2014. Some sources claim the model could in fact be a GT variant of the new R8 V10 Plus. Carrying the R8 GT Sport or R8 RS moniker, the limited edition model would compete with the SLS AMG Black Series. Distinguishing features include a front spoiler and winglets, enlarged side intakes, and an oversized rear wing.

This is probably not the final body design of the new R8 GT. There were slight differences in body design between last year’s R8 GT and R8 V10 that are not on this mule.

The R8 GT is the Audi’s top track car, ironically much faster than the even more expensive R8 LMS Ultra and R8 Grand Am that teams use in actual races (due to restrictions imposed by race regulations).

No doubt the new R8 GT will likely be even faster and more dynamic than the previous generation:
- slightly lighter than last year’s model (which was just 3,362 lb, which is still 243 lbs lighter than the V10 Plus)
- have an extra 30 to 40 HP added to its 560 HP
- likely have a dual-clutch transmission.

The previous generation R8 GT was one of the top ten fastest supercars tested at both Nurburgring and Hockenheim race tracks (which share hosting of the F1 German Grand Prix) tested by Horst von Sauma, supercar tester and Nurburgring expert driver since 1997. Von Sauma was able to drive the R8 GT faster than any Nissan GT-R he tested at the Nurburgring. This link shows the top 10 fastest tested lap times at both Nurburgring and Hockenheim during the supertests – most of these times end up also being the fastest ever independent lap times for those stock cars (the list is optimized for Nurburgring; just click on Hockenheim to re-optimize the list for Hockenheim). If another driver achieved a significantly faster time with the same car it's usually because his car was modified (e.g., with an anti-roll cage, etc.).

This link is the supercar test of the R8 GT (it scored an excellent 69 out of 70 points).
