Consumer Reports Sums Up The 2014 MDX As Unremarkable And Anonymous -Shouldn't You Expect More For $50k?

The Acura MDX has long been a favorite SUV choice for many affluent suburbanites. We think its 2014 redesign will continue to please many, though impress few.

This three-row car-based SUV has cultivated a loyal clientele by combining a measure of luxury with a lot of versatility. It's less ostentatious than, say, a BMW X5 yet has a bit more exclusivity than a Toyota Highlander.

When the 2014 Acura MDX goes on sale in July, its prices will span a wider spectrum thanks to the addition of a front-wheel drive version. Sticker prices will run from $42,290 to $56,505, with a typical AWD Tech trim level retailing for $48,565.

...so basically it is a psuedo-lux SUV that undercuts the more luxurious competition by almost $10k.

next.

I'm pretty sure most people that are getting this SUV are not looking for a driver enthusiast vehicle...those people would most probably get a roadster, or a coupe...etc....The MDX will please its intended consumers as had the last generation. I feel like consumer report sometimes don't appropriate the right comments to the right areas for certain vehicles.

As are Autospies headlines...

Consumer Reports actually liked the MDX...here, I can cherry pick quotes from the same article too and get a totally different impression from the dumb bias headlines Autospies agents always throw out for Honda/Acura products:

"As always with Acura, the powertrain is slick and powerful. It's also nice to see that road noise is reduced, and handling is still responsive. The cabin is well put together and impeccably finished"

"We commend the punchy and refined 290-hp, 3.5-liter V6. The engine now employs direct injection. That, combined with some weight reduction and other measures, results in a combined EPA fuel economy gain of 2 mpg. We got 18 mpg with the previous MDX. The slick six-speed automatic is largely a carryover and shifts are always timely."

"the new MDX preserves most of the assets of the previous generation, especially the plush and versatile interior. Plus, it gains one or two new tricks. In the three-row SUV club, it has all the ingredients to remain one of the sensible choices."

C'mon dude, a heated steering wheel is a DEALER installed feature...on a LUXURY SUV!

LOL. This unremarkable and anonymous vehicle will sell just fine and will be considered a bargain in its segment.

Because it lacks the overall luxury amenities and cuts corners to stay cheaper, the entire Acura concept.

LOL. Maybe because all of the supposed "luxury amenities" are a true waste and just add weight and needless expense. At the same time, AT THE SAME PRICE POINT, please let me know which competitors, outside of the lame Infiniti JX35, offers the same. Yeah, that's what I thought.

Um, exactly what luxury amenities are you referring to? The RLX and MDX are pretty loaded for their respective prices. Yes, there are some things that are not offered in any trim level, but THOSE are the needlessly expensive and weight-inducing amenities I am referring to, i.e., panoramic/oversized sunroof/moonroof, wood-laden steering wheel, et al.

Don't like the look as much as the 2011-2013 model. Not all of the tech features are necessarily a step forward-- heard that you can no longer scroll the phone directory while moving and there are other restrictions in the interest of "safety." Of note, great deals now on last few 2013's. Had a 2011 with 27000 miles with end of lease 12/1/13-- Dealer buys out lease early (payoff about $28K), get $30K trade, out the door with 2013-Tech package for <42K -- lease payment $40/mo less than old car and out the door for nothing more than 1st payment.

Same old Odyssey based POS that every Chinese person in the Bay Area will buy.

It's a new platform, not Odyssey based, almost 300lbs lighter...

My only concern is the electric steering and the bland styling...but as a total package - value, performance, reliability, comfort, etc...it's hard to beat
