Right Now The BMW 528, 328 Convertible, 328i And X1 Cost The IDENTICAL Amount To Lease. WHICH Should 001 Get?
Something is happening for the first time in my life.

I will actually own a car for the full duration of a lease.

Yes, you heard it right.

After owning and leasing over 60 cars in the last 20 years, I've actually KEPT one for the full duration of the lease.

Well, almost.

I still have until late August for that to occur with my BMW 335d M-Sport.

But if you have been in-market you know that before the lease comes to an end some companies do programs called 'Pull-Ahead'.

That means they offer you early termination at no penalty if you lease another one of their models.

So, I'm trying to figure which direction to go and this time I'm going to ask for your help...

My good buddy and ace sales guy Robert Brown from BMW of Monrovia called me the other day and offered me what seem to be an offer I CANNOT refuse.

Before I tell you the deal, you need to know my situation.

You all know I just bought a 2013 10th Anniversary Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited which I am loving!

But if you've been reading the site for any length of time, you know that I like to have a truck AND a car for whatever mood I'm in.

So that's why I also have the current 2011 BMW 335d M-Sport which has been nothing less than amazing.

The only issue is two-fold.

1. Diesel gas is $.25 a gallon MORE than premium here in CA. so that negates the gas mileage advantage.
2. The new 240hp BMW motor with 8-speed tranny and stop start technology gets virtually identical mileage as a diesel for less money per gallon.

That's why in cars (NOT trucks), diesel's are DOOMED to fail here in the USA.

Plus, hybrids are getting so much better that adds even more pressure.

So as I was formulating what I was going to get Robert added a twist...

He told me with the current incentives and lease subventions I could choose between a 528i M-Sport, 328 Convertible M-Sport, 328i sedan OR X1 28i X-Line for the SAME monthly payment!

It's truly hard to consider anything else when the BMW's are so good and the competition is not as aggressive on lease pricing. PLUS BMW have FREE maintenance during the lease.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE the Audi's but NOT for TWICE the lease price.

That new info is making it hard for me to make a decision.

ALL have positive attributes...528i, great size/ride. 328i, all new iPad like nav and the best 3-Series yet. 328 Convertible M-Sport the best looking of the bunch in my opinion. And finally, the X1 X-line gets great mileage and is right sized and is most practical.

So knowing this info, WHICH would you recommend for me and WHY?

Remember, I already have the Wrangler Unlimited for when I need total utility and I get new cars every week to test from the manufacturers (I know, tough job right?) so I hardly drive any of the cars I own so I want to keep the expense down to a minimum and not be wasteful. And ALL of these are M-Sport versions or X-Line so they're WELL equipped and ALL great. And I can afford to lease ANY BMW, but I do not want to waste dough on a car I won't drive often or be able to wring the FULL amount of performance out say in the case of an M3/M5/M6. Lastly, they all must be MY13's because the same incentives aren't on the 14's yet.

So, what is your recommendation Spies? Any WHY should I take your advice?

Also, if YOU are in market, SPY before you BUY and contact Robert if you are looking for a great deal and awesome service!

I'd go F30 328i, that's a heck of a car. The 528i is great, and given your height maybe the better choice, but the 328i is killer. The X1 - NO, YOU HAVE A JEEP ALREADY!!! The older 3 convertible is just that, an older 3 convertible - you live in southern California, yesterdays model is just that, yesterdays model!!!

No charge for the advice, this time!!!

I will get the 528i for me , because of the car size and the great interior.

This seems easy. You have a jeep as stated earlier so no need for a convertible or the x1. You are getting rid of a 3 series so by deduction, the 528 is the way to go.

Stop comparing cost per gallon when evaluating diesel. You have to look at cost per mile. Even at the premium they are charging for diesel (varies wildly around the country), in most areas it is still cost effective to choose the diesel. Since (as you noted) free service is included with many cars (diesel and gas) the only variable is fuel cost.

Also don't forget residual (trade-in) values. Diesels almost always retain far more value compared to the same vehicle powered by gas. I was looking at used X5 diesels this week and was amazed at their prices. 2-3 years old and still about 80% of their new cost. In fact, I'm not sure I would pay $48k for a two-three year old model when a new one is only about $10k more. Incredible!

Sorry, I was off topic...

001, I agree with the consensus, the 328i is a great complement to your Jeep. However, if you (like me) are looking for a little more space and comfort, the 528 would fill the bill nicely.

Notify Robert that his list are missing out on a 128i with M Sport, 6MT, and Xenons.

Last NA I6 from BMW.

If you want to go faster for some reason, get the 135i with M Sport and DCT.

i have a question, what is the price they are telling you per month because ive never been quoted a BMW for half the price of an Audi... im looking at the possbility of replacing my B8 with a F30 in a couple of months but it certainly isnt half the price.

If the 328i is M Sport that is the winner, undoubtedly.

Was just out in the Valley driving a buddies and it's a great product w/ the sport pack. And if it has the M Sport it'll look even BETTER.

Honestly, none of these will do since you're attempting to replace a 450+ ft/lb of torque for less than 300 ones in your choices. Either way, you'll be disappointed. I sold my 2009 535 iXdrive last year for the 2013 X1. My 5 series was the last of the hydraulic steering breed, and I loved everything about that car. It's so refined, and impeccably built. My current X1 xDrive28i is light and agile, picks up speed really quickly, and is just as fast, if not faster than my 2009 twin-turbo 535xDrive. I purposely choose the X1 without the full-length sun-roof (a savings of 300 lbs) nor powered seats (a savings of another 200 lbs). My X1 is around 500 lbs lighter than the 5 series, so that's why it's so light and nimble and agile on its feet. I needed the additional ground clearance here, but you don't. But a rear-wheel X1 will save you even more weight, and enhancing every aspects described above even more. My wife absolutely loves the looks of the X1.
