Cutting Edge Formula 1 Team Clings To Antiquidated Computer Systems For Development
Lotus F1 is one of the businesses that will continue using Windows XP after April 8, 2014, the date when Microsoft will officially stop providing support for the 11-year-old operating system.

The reason is pretty simple: most Lotus F1’s apps are running flawlessly on Windows XP, so the team has decided to delay the upgrade to a newer operating system.

Instead, it’ll continue running XP, but only in offline mode, just to make sure that hackers won’t attempt to break into their computers.

Very exciting news. Can't wait to see them upgrade to Windows 9 gonna be one hell of an event.

Just the access to additional RAM alone in a 64 bit OS should be cause enough to move. Much less the security issues. Just wait until a competitor hacks their data.

Plus why are you on Windows to begin with? Real work is on Linux.

Ha. I do most of my work on mac and then it runs in some unix cluster or other. Windows 7 is fine as well although still not as fast with disc I/O.

Though nobody is hacking their data if they are offline. It's just more expensive to maintain web-based apps (if that's what they have) when they are written to support some old version of Internet Explorer through various hacks. XP is a 12-year-old operating system and it's been showing its age for a while now. And yea having more than 4gb of addressing space is nice as well.

Maybe their maintenance costs are currently zero, in which case whatever. I just don't think this is very interesting news. Lots of people are still on XP for dubious or sensible reasons, but I'm not keeping a list of them, heh.

The question becomes, what gives you the technological superiority to tell another entity that their software is obsolete without knowing the exact software solution they are using or how they use this software?

You do not even know if they are using a "stock", consumer grade version of the O.S.

The article clearly states that Lotus F1 uses XP in offline mode only.

You have to go online eventually and hence the risk.

But what they, Lotus, are using this/these XP based computing solutions are sensitive enough that they do not put them online.

I'm sure Lotus, and all F1 teams, are running proprietary software for their data sensitive tasks: CFD, real-time information gathering, etc.
