SPIED + VIDEO: The Latest Clips Of The BEST EVER BMW M3 Lapping The Nurburgring
Just like it's other M bredrin, the BMW M5 and M6 that were the focus of conversation for 2012 leading into 2013, the M3 and M4 reveals are expected to be the most anticipated events of 2013 leading into 2014. And there's good reason for this.

All signs point to this generation M3 being the BEST ever.

I firmly believe that the E9x BMW M3 will become the 996 of M3's — essentially, I am saying it will be the red-headed step child of the group.

From what we've heard, on paper, the upcoming M3/M4 will have similar horsepower figures to the current vehicle; however, it will get a SUBSTANTIAL boost in torque. In addition, the rumormill speculation has said the car should get lighter. Adding this together with what we assume will be the most advanced BMW transmission yet, we think this is going to be one VERY impressive product.

Not to mention the renderings and spy pics we've seen seem to hint at one seriously aggressive looking auto. We're all over it like white on rice, folks.

BUT, the BEST part so far has been the new M3's sound. This thing just purrs like a kitten all day long and has such beautiful and traditional six-cylinder sound. To my ears it's very Porsche-like and I am loving every second of it.

Don't take my word for it. Check out the LATEST spy video coming to you straight from Germany's world famous Nurburgring.

Though I've been critical of BMW's business moves lately, I have to say WHEN THEY GET IT RIGHT, BOY DO THEY GET IT RIGHT!

The new BMW M3 (F80) has been spied once again, ahead of an official reveal set for later this year or early 2014.

Under the hood it is expected to feature an inline-six 3.0-liter S55 turbocharged engine producing 415 hp (310 kW) and 395 lb-ft (535 Nm). This engine will also power the upcoming BMW M4 Coupe (due in late 2014), which will be the range-topping model of the new 4-Series set to arrive this year with Coupe, Cabriolet and GranCoupe versions in the pipeline.

E9X M3 is heavy and compared to competitors and even it's own chipped/lightly modded 335 brother, a bit slow especially on torque

Good news that it'll be lighter than E46 one. The only thing I hope is that it has hydraulic steering.

I miss that beautiful V8 sound! The new turbo looks to be a great sleeper engine, on sound anyway.

Let’s wait until the actual car comes out and driven before jumping to conclusions based on assumptions, speculations and a short video clip with cherry-picked scenes: “The BEST EVER BMW M3 Lapping The Nurburgring… All signs point to this generation M3 being the BEST ever.” And even if it is, will it be enough?

Despite the 305 lb weight difference between the current M3 and RS5, it was the heavier Audi RS5 that twice broke the 8 minute barrier on the tough Nurburgring track. Both RS5 (original 2010 and facelifted 2012 models) posted identical lap times of 7:59 min. The current M3 was six seconds slower at 8:05 min. All three stock cars were driven to their limits by Horst von Sauma (the expert Nurburgring driver and supercar tester) in Sport Auto mag’s supertests.

If the current RS5 (with 305 lbs with more weight than current M3) is six seconds faster than the current M3 on the Nurburging, imagine what the next gen RS5 (likely to be lighter than the next gen M4 and M3) could do.

The next generation RS5 might is likely to be lighter than the 3,460 lb E46 M3 as well. Four years ago, in March 2009, Car and Driver mag reported that “Audi is currently testing a prototype of the next-generation S5 that weighs 880 pounds less than the current car. He (Michael Dick, Audi's global head of product engineering) outlined the ongoing increase in the use of aluminum, magnesium, and high-strength steel as a main reason behind the mass reduction.” If the current RS5’s 4,009 lb weight is reduced by 880 lbs, the next generation RS5 could be around 3,129 lbs.

@Satriani1

First off no one's talking about the RS5. We're talking about the M3 compared to past gen M3s.

Second, the M3 is a MUCH better driver's car than the RS5. Anyone who's driven them would agree. The RS5 is a better long-distance cruiser.

Both are great cars but for different reasons.

00R: "no one's talking about the RS5"

scenicbyway12 was talking about the RS5 above my post.

Personal opinion based on your biases on what you feel is a driver's car to you.

With respect to the facelifted 2013 RS5 that's now available in the USA -- if you option it correctly, even supercar tester Horst von Sauma said the RS5 thrilled him, dynamics were perfect, the engine and transmission were fantastic. In his expert assessment, the RS5 and M3 each had their strengths, but overall very little separated them as their supertest ratings showed. A mere long distanced cruiser this is not, if properly optioned.

You know many people and journalists have complained about the electronic steering in the new 991 Porsche 911. Some have complained about the Boxster/Cayman but the general concensus is that the Boxster/Cayman as slightly better steering feel than the 911. But as much as there have been complaints about the new steering in these Porsche's the electric steering in most BMW's have been universally panned. For a vehicle like the M3 and M4 it is certainly hopeful that they get the steering improved. It's one thing to lighten the car, give the turbo 6 more torque, improve the chassis etc. But if BMW cannot get the powersteering system "right" it will all be for naught. The Audi RS5 and S5 both have improved steering systems to give the car more road feel. POrsche's new GT3 has supposidly brought back a lot of the lost steering feel. This has got to be a must for BMW.

Valid points, but I have to say the S5/RS5 are not the best benchmarks for steering feel or "improvement" in that department.
