CAR WARS! 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs. Mercedes ML vs. Porsche Cayenne vs. VW Touareg DIESEL SHOWDOWN
Not so long ago if you wanted a diesel sport-utility vehicle, you only really had one option. Oil burning SUVs just weren't wanted, especially when it came to the luxury class. After gas prices spiked and have been bumping around in recent years though, clearly consumers began to open up their options.

Hybrids and diesel variants have now become the standard for any company producing a luxury SUV. Hell, some companies even offer both — cough, cough, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

And if you were to look at the latest crop of diesel locomotives...er...SUVs, you'd find four options that really set the bar for the market:

- 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec
- Porsche Cayenne Diesel
- Volkswagen Touareg

That led to MotorTrend putting them together in an epic showdown BUT, most importantly, WHO won?

Check out the results below and let us know if YOU agree with the turn out...

4th: Volkswagen Touareg TDI
A generally good SUV
, but it simply doesn't feel as good as it once was.

3rd: Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec

Perfect for the diesel luxury SUV buyer who also abhors the idea of diesel.

2nd: Porsche Cayenne Diesel

It'll burn up back roads more quickly than it'll burn though a single tank.

1st: Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4x4 EcoDiesel
Capability, character, class
, and content. The hallmarks of a winner.

These comparisons, specifically between Motor Trend and Car and Driver are simply a joke.

In MT's comparison they finish: Jeep, Porsche, Mercedes, VW
In C&D's comparison they finished: VW, Porsche, Mercedes, Jeep, and BMW

Earlier, MT and C&D compared 5 midsize sedans. And I think the finishing results were:

MT's comparison: VW Passat, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima (can't remember if there was another)
C&D's comparison: Accord, Fusion, Altima, Passat

Why does it seem like VW is such a polarizing product? VW either finished first or last. And you cannot say it's "payola" because each magazine flip flops their respective VW results.

Better than the MB ML350?? Funny, because the Jeep Cherokee is based on the Mercedes chassis and suspension from when Mercedes owned Chrysler.
Sounds like some good old fashioned auto magazine manipulation to me to satisfy advertisers.
Always take magazine articles with at least TWO grains of salt and an aspirin.
