NHTSA Stands Up To Chrysler And Says All They Want Is The Truth Over Recall Refusal
The top U.S. auto safety regulator defended the government’s request asking Chrysler Group LLC to recall 2.7 million vehicles for fire risks, but stopped short of telling owners to quit driving the vehicles under investigation.

“We felt very strongly that the process that we undertook and the findings that we made and ... we made the decision to issue a recall request. We do not take that very lightly,” said National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Strickland in his first public comments on the Jeep recall request after a Consumer Reports forum here.

“On the other hand, we are always open to hear the arguments from the manufacturer,” said Strickland. “At the end of the day, this is about seeking the truth — making sure that if there is a defect that imposes an reasonable risk, if a manufacturer has more data than we have not been made aware of, we are always happy to take it.”

So, let me see, we kill upwards of 55,000 people a year on the highways. These 2.7 million vehicles are "alleged" to have resulted in 51 deaths, from 1993 to 2007! Yep, they are a high risk vehicle and need a recall...give me a break. More people are killed every year texting.

If NHTSA had investigated the 51 deaths thoroughly, and found that the vehicle design was indeed at fault and that rules or design parameters were overlooked at the time these vehicles were being manufactured, the request would have been a demand. There are way too many factors that could have led to these "fires". IMO the main factor is vehicle maintenance.
