Audi's Updated R8 GT Said To Be Bowing At This Year's Le Mans — Looks Ready To Go

If you're a fan of the Audi R8 and you have liked what its done for the 2014 model year so far, then you better buckle up. It's about to get more wild.

That's because after showing off the new V8 and V10 — coupes and spyders — its time for the big reveal. The GT.

That's the most hardcore road-going version of the R8. Essentially, it's what the 911 GT3 is for the 911 lineup. Lighter, stiffer, faster and it sports an attitude. And, of course, they'll be very few of them.

Recently spy shots were snapped of the car on the track and though we haven't seen anymore, the internet rumormill has speculated we'll see something for the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. That's this upcoming Saturday (6/22).

Set to be unveiled at the Le Mans 24 Hours this year, the supercar will receive a tuned version of the pre-facelift R8 GT’s 5.2-litre V10.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard on the upcoming rear-drive GT, with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto offered on the four-wheel-drive version that should be good for 0-62mph in 3.4sec and 199mph...

The next Audi R8 GT ought to be something special among supercars.

Evo car mag did a group test of an Audi R8 V10Plus, Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C (Evo's driving clip in link). The June 2013 issue of Evo has the full test article: "a twin-clutch gearbox and a hike to 542bhp help to elevate the Audi R8 beyond mere Porsche 911s and Nissan GT-Rs – it’s time to face the really big boys (Ferrari and McLaren)". According to Evo's reviewer the Audi more than matched the Ferrari and McLaren -- and, after testing was done, he chose the R8 as his ride home, lol.

Horst von Sauma (supercar tester and Nurburgring expert driver) did a supertest of the current Audi R8 GT on two famous German tracks that co-host the German F1 Grand Prix (Nurburgring and Hockenheim) -- and gave the Audi a near perfect 69 marks (out of 70). For comparison, the Ferrari 458 Italia scored 67 markes on the supertest. No BMW or Mercedes was close to the high marks and praise given to the Audi.
