Chrysler Bows Under Pressure From The Fed - Recalls 1.56 Million Jeeps For Fire Risk
Reversing course under government pressure, Chrysler Group LLC agreed Tuesday to recall 1.56 million older Jeep models for what federal safety regulators say are fire risks caused by gas tanks that leak after rear-end collisions. The government blames such collisions for the deaths of at least 51 people driving Jeep SUVs.

But in a victory, the Auburn Hills automaker won’t have to recall all 2.7 million vehicles sought by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Instead, Chrysler will offer a customer service campaign for the additional 1.2 million vehicles that the government wanted it to recall. Earlier Tuesday, a Chrysler spokesman had said the company was recalling all 2.7 million vehicles originally sought by the NHTSA.

Also as part of the 11th-hour deal, Chrysler did not agree the vehicles were defective.

Just goes to show you, that you can be right and still be wrong in the eyes of this administration. Blackmail or "persuasion" always works.

I don't think their is anything wrong about persuading them to fix something that is unsafe.

As a rule, Auto manufacturers have the nasty tendency to try to avoid ANY blame that could be put on their products, even to the point of not undersatnding (or wanting to understand) the customer complaint. I wrote about a design flaw (too fragile material selected for antisway bar links, that can snap violently under the spirited driving that a vehicle marked as "R/T" is usually driven!
Less that 24 hours after my comment was sent to the discussion forum, misteriously, one person from Chrysler called me to offer a free replacement fro my cracked (but still un-separated) link... But they were ONLY providing ONE link (leaving me the other side link without the corresponding replacement. Since they wanted over a $100 US-dollar for the second part, I preferred to go to a local parts store, where the vendor told me: OH YEAH! I sell a LOT of those replacements in generic brand form, and the ones I sell are completely metallic ones, and come with a pair of little greaser nipples in order to lubricate them... and just looking at the stronger, metallic appearance and larger weld sizes, seem to be as good or Better than the expensive, failure prone Chrysler OEM parts. After several years of sporty driving my Turbocharged R/T, I can attest the generuic brand outlasted the original ones. And I preferred to change both sides, because the original part was a failure waiting to happen. the thing is; As soon as I considered this original links to be less than "safe", and warranting a Recall, the manufacturer was stirred and hot enough to silence me, but was still reluctanto to provide BOTH sides, to save a few pennies! So long for their comitment to fasety and customer satisfaction. Amclaussen. P.D.: and they passed me a paper to sing, saying that I was completely satisfied!!! (I'm shure the peperwork generated in handling THAT signed paper will surely cost them many times the cost of the damn secon side link!
