CAR WARS! Hot Hatch Showdown — BMW M135i vs. Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG vs. Volkswagen GTI

CAR WARS! Hot Hatch Showdown — BMW M135i vs. Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG vs. Volkswagen GTI
This is where things get interesting. For the past couple of weeks we've watched Steve Sutcliffe drive the all-new Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG and the CLA45 AMG. He seemed relatively pleased with them but they did have their pitfalls here and there.

That said, the question becomes how does it stand up to the competition. Clearly the BMW M135i that has won over most of Europe's heart is on that list and, more interestingly, the Volkswagen Golf GTI makes the cut too. From what I've heard the vehicle is a stellar product but to go up against vehicles with approximately more than 100 horsepower over it says a lot. Perhaps the dollar factor will have folks giving it a shot over the other two.

Anyhow, enough of the philosophical stuff, let's see how this plays out below.

WHO are YOU rooting for, and WHY?

It may be known as 'the Beast', but can the 355bhp Mercedes A45 AMG overpower the BMW M135i and Volkswagen Golf GTI? Steve Sutcliffe finds out in the biggest hot hatch shootout of the year.

scenicbyway12: You're out of date. That RS3 5-door hatchback in your link is no longer sold because it was made the end of the life of the second generation A3 model line (Type 8P, 2003 to 20012 in Europe). Harris dishonestly compared an Audi from a model line that began in 2003 with the 2nd generation BMW 1 Series that began in 2011-2012. In fact Harris dishonestly chose the very latest BMW 135i 3-door hatchback (F21 began in 2012) instead of the 135i 5-door hatchback (F20 began in 2011).

My link had the new S3 is from the third generation A3 Type 8V (began 2012 in Europe). So my link compares both Audi and BMW model lines that began in 2012 -- and both 3 door hatchbacks, both all wheel drives [In my earlier post, I mistaken wrote it as A3 vs M135ix, so cidflekken is correct that it's the S3, not A3].

Interesting review between the S3 and M135. The S3 won since it was more practical, cheaper. While the M135 was more fun, faster, and stopped better. Since these cars are supposed to be sporty, out of these two I would take a rwd M135, because it would probably be faster yet and more fun. But out of all the cars in the segment I would still take the A45 amg.

I'm really not trying to be rude, but do the Agents not know the contents of the site that they "manage"?

There just seem to be constant duplications of posted articles, including this one.

You need to take a basic German language class :)

Autobild clearly said the two cars were almost identical in 0 to 200 km/h sprints (the Audi was 0.1 seconds faster) -- even though the Audi had the disadvantage of being equipped with manual transmission (the M135ix does not offer manual tranny). The 8-speed automatic transmission-equipped M135 was only "a touch faster" to 100 km/h (0.4 seconds) than the 6-speed manual equipped Audi. However, Autobild said the two cars would have been on par had they tested an Audi with the optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (the faster, more sporty Audi S3). It's clear, the dual-clutch tranny S3 is just as fast as the M135... and that the upcoming RS3 will blow away this M135.

Autobild concluded that "the better all-round car is the Audi S3" with a balanced blend of agility, comfort, price and fuel economy. Autobild asked "which sport compact was more fun (Spaß)" but never directly answered the question, because the $5,100 euros more expensive M135 happened to have two equipment advantages: 8-speed auto transmission and sportier tires. It did say that, from a sports perspective the M135i goes around corners better.

Autobild clearly said that M135 had small advantages in vehicle dynamics and braking due to its grippier Michelin Super Sport tires.

Conclusion? The manual Audi was 5,100 Euros cheaper. The smart car buyer would save a lot of money by buying an Audi S3 with the dual-clutch transmission (cost 1,900 euros), then using the remaining cost savings to buy the very best high performance tires that's better than the Michelin Super Sport used on the BMW. And the car buyer would still have savings left over for even more upgrades or to keep in the bank.

Against the expensive A45 AMG, the S3 is similarly beter value for money.

I wonder why they picked a performance GTI instead of the Golf R for this comparison? It'll still be cheaper than either of the others. Perhaps they just wanted the GTI as an entry level "performance" hatch?
