NHTSA May Test Recalled Jeeps To See If Chrysler Fix Really Works
Auto safety advocates said Monday that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering crash-testing older recalled Jeep SUVs to determine if the remedy will protect drivers in rear-impact crashes.

Former NHTSA Administrator Joan Claybrook, Center for Auto Safety head Clarence Ditlow and a victim of a fiery Jeep crash met Monday morning with NHTSA Administrator David Strickland and a half-dozen senior officials to urge the safety agency to insist that Chrysler Group LLC do more than agree to install trailer hitch assemblies on some older SUVs in order to protect the gas tank, which NHTSA says can rupture and catch fire when the Jeeps are hit from behind.
