DRIVEN + VIDEO: FIRST Video Review Of The All-New Maserati Ghibli — Is The Midsize Maser Going To DISRUPT The Luxury Frontrunners?
This is what we've been waiting for. For years the midsize luxury class has been ruled by the Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. But here comes trouble and it's from Italy. We welcome the Maserati Ghibli.

As Maser is shooting to hit that 50,000 unit volume by 2015, the Ghibli and Levante — sport-utility vehicle — are supposed to be the primary drivers of that initiative. And here we find ourselves, watching the very first video review of the all-new Ghibli.

Presented by the one and only Harry Metcalfe of Evo Magazine, I can't think of a better person to kick this party off. Oh yes, I can: Agent 001. But we'll live with Metcalfe for now.

Though I won't give away Metcalfe's findings, I will say this. If I were shopping for a midsize luxury sedan or four-door coupe, the Ghibli's sound and look are pretty hard to count out.

That said, watch Metcalfe's review below. It's a good one.

The Maserati Ghibli is tasked with massively increasing the volume of cars the Italian firm sells a year, targeting 50,000 sales by 2015. Just under five metres in length, the Ghibli is designed to compete with rivals like the Mercedes CLS and BMW 6-series Gran Coupe and has the option of a diesel engine for the first time in Maserati’s 99-year history.

I'm I the only person that's not enamored with this car? The back end looks like a Kia for Christ sakes. The competitors (especially the CLS) look more attractive. Maybe I need to see it in person to appreciate it...

"Am I the only person...?" I meant.

Nope. You're not the only one. It's looks don't appeal to me, either.

I have a hard time envisioning Maserati becoming a major player. I'd sooner get a Porsche Panamera, if I were looking for a sedan, than this.

It COULD sell very well, but it will never take a big chunk of the market from its direct competitors. Maserati doesn't have the dealer network, and I doubt they are going to sell them next to Chrysler cars.

Everything about the petrol car makes me want to check it out, except the wheels and the name. Pity it's only 5.4 seconds to 60 mph (5.6 seconds to 100 km/h) according to manufacturer claims. The Audi A6 3.0T is slightly faster. The name Ghibli sounds like the name of a Mini-Mini Cooper competitor.

Well-I find the comments interesting. For those of you who are unaware the name "Gibli" is an historical name that Maserati used for one of the most beautiful sports GT's on the planet back in the 60's and 70's.
It was a GT competitor to Ferrari's Daytona Coupe and the Aston Martin DBS V8. The also used the name Gibli when they came out in the 90's with BMW 3 series fighter. Unfurtunately it did not do that well in the market place. I do agree on the rear tail lights. But the rest of the car looks great and unlike Audi it's rear wheel drive. Also design wize Audi's have looked the same for yrs.Their interiors, while nicley put together, also have not change much in a number of yrs. The basic shape of this car is beautiful and voluptious as well as classically Italian. It's a welcome change to the German hirarchy!

Its an interesting choice but I would think this the 330hp version would probably be priced like the BMW 550i which would handily smoke it and will have better interior and pretty much all features.

It may steal some 6 series Gran Coupe customers but that is a niche car anyways so I can't see it winning so much on volume.
