Volkswagen Pondering 911 Like Sports Car

Taking the technology of its limited edition XL1 even further, VW is supposedly planning a new sports car with 911 performance.

Volkswagen is an automaker that’s more than wealthy enough to take its fair share of technology risks. Some pay off, others don’t. But that financial risk can be well worth it in the end. Which leads us to this recent rumor that will more than likely turn out to be true: VW is allegedly planning and developing an ultra-light, mid-engined sports car that’ll carry the base price of a Porsche 911 but will have the fuel economy of a Golf GTD.

Big mistake to put that into production using the VW brand. They tried that in the luxury car market and failed miserably (great car, Jetta styling, poor sales). Public perception will no more accept a 911-like sports car (with 911-like pricing) than they will a luxury car. That's why VW owns the Audi brand. Use it.

And hey, VW, if you aren't happy with Audi's sales numbers (which are actually pretty good) or you want to spice them up, consider changing your exterior styling. I think you had it spot-on with the 2012 A5, and then lost it.
