Korean Auto Market Upsidedown, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota slowing down
Audi, Honda and Volkswagen are increasing their share at a rapid pace in Korea's import car market, signaling a major shakeup in the longstanding three-way dominance by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.

The change comes at a time when a growing number of Korean consumers are buying import cars. Newly registered import cars in the first half of this year soared 56.2 percent to 20,193 units from a year ago, thanks to the increased number of relatively less expensive cars and 11 new diesel models.

Audi, Volkswagen and Honda began to step up marketing in Korea last year, while introducing new models aggressively. Given that Audi is an affiliate of Volkswagen, their combined share has already shot up to No. 1, dealing a blow to existing leaders.

Back in 2003, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota controlled 64.8 percent of the Korean import car market. Their combined share, however, plunged to 44.2 percent in the first half of this year.

Funny just as here Audi and VW appeal to a younger demographic. Lexus to the "golden years" group.

VAG is number one in Korea, (import market) what now logical. Did you read the article, it said that Audi has doubled its market share (import market) since 2003 but on the other hand BMW has had its share cut in half. People in new markerts are buying Audis because they aren't badgewhores.

Most korean people are actually badgewhores.
I know it because I am Korean.
They like to show off alot -not just cars but everything in general.

But on the other side, there're are many people who are humble about their wealth and not trying to be a$$wholes. And most people buy Audis for that reason. The conservive styling has appealed to many young people.

Sorry for any grammar mistake... English is my third language. haha :)

40 000 units a year is still better then 0 witch is what the number was not long ago.

The situation in Korea seems to be similar but mirrowed to China, where VW/Audi was no. 1, but when the rest camed in they lost a lot market share despite increasing sales.

Thing like this are only normal, it's logical mathematics.

I ship out cars to korean on bi-weekly basis, and let me tell you...they are badgewhores. The cheapest car shipped out so far was a MB S550. They have the money to do it though.

Should be pointed out that the declining market share is exclusive to Mercedes and BMW. Toyota has remained constant. Why didnt ya point that out when you were summarizing the article Plano? Hmmmmmm

Plano-
I agree, I myself am a badgewhore to a certain extent.
What I'm saying is, Korea's road is very different than of here U.S. The roads aren't quiet nice, the traffic is horrible, gas price is outrageous.
With these conditions, it's quiet difficult, almost impossible to drive a car such as a Veyron, Carrera GT (to name couple of high high-end cars I shipped so far).
What I'm saying is, be reasonable.
