Audi's New A1 Rumors

Rumors are still swirling that Audi is considering a new small car, the A1. What Car? speculates that the hypothetical A1 family would be positioned below the not very successful A2, perhaps using the next generation VW Polo platform. In order to keep costs down, the A1 is expected to eschew the A2's expensive aluminum construction and quattro all-wheel drive will likely not be an option.

Speculation spans a family of A1 models, with the Photoshopped roadster shown at right our personal favorite. The A1 could hit the market in 2010, which means we likely won't see auto show versions until 2009.

Just a photoshop, there have been many A1 pshops, this is the first roadster one. We should also look out for the KTM/Audi light roadster in the future. That one should be really awesome.

I have a VeeDub right now and am buying an Audi. But I do have to say, hearing that some Audis are based on VW platforms, the Polo platform especially, is a turn off.

You can go to town like a bean counting banker on why this is necessary, say it's no big deal, the guts are different, etc. etc. But it's not a plus, let's put it that way. The Polo isn't renowned for doing anything but saving people money and Audi does not benefit from the association--except maybe with die-hards looking for the silver lining in everything.

Now, I know Porsche is doing the same thing with the Cayenne ... but I'd say that's not good for Porsche's image with that car, either.

VW is a great company, but it's a sow's ear in the luxury market where silk purses trying to be made.

Not a single Audi that you can buy today is based on the Polo platform. There are some Audis based on the Golf platform, A3 and the new TT has a higly modified Golf platform. However the Golf platform is one of the best small car platforms in the world. The Golf has beaten the BMW 1 series on many occasions.

Crackityjones- this is just a rumor and the car may not even get made. The baby Lambo is built on the A8 frame but they are totaly diffrent cars. The A3 and TT are built on the Golf platform but share about 20 of the frame components. Chewy is right the Golf platform is a great one.

runs on a tiny diesel doesn't it? and gets like 70mpg.

I own a Golf (GTI) and am trading it in for an A3 (Golf-platform). So I must like something they're doing.

But the less Audi can share with VW--which has the reputation and mission as being the utilitarian people's car--the better, IMO.
