Toyota Gives Up On Turbo And Cabrio Versions Of GT86 Citing Costs
The Japanese based automaker Toyota has no more plans for putting the Turbo and the Cabrio versions of the GT86 into production anymore.

Toyota has already announced its plans to introduce a turbocharged version of the GT86 and also a convertible variant of the model but it seems that these two vehicles will not see daylight anymore because the company thinks they are “too expensive for their limited volumes”. This means that the over-seas Scion FR-S will not receive a turbocharged version or a convertible either, so fans of the car will have to settle for the current naturally aspirated solid roof variant.

So yet again they are killing off performance at Toyota? I was hoping the had figured it out out over there, but looks like they still don't get that performance in the lineup brings sales to other vehicles. They come in looking at the FRS cabrio and buy something more affordable.

Good point Agent009, having performance cars gives the brand and the dealerships a different vibe and brings in new buyers. I'm curious whether Subaru will push forward with a turbo BRZ, however. I really hope they do; it would be a hell of a fun car and really give the next MX-5 a run for its money.

It is essentially a halo car, you really can't justify it on sales of that one mode.

Toyota feels that they don't need any new customers, because the current ones keep coming back for more. This indifference will come back to bite them eventually

ToyoLex convertible lineup:
Solara
IS C PRHT
SC 430 PRHT
Paseo
Celica

The Scion FR-S Cabrio is certainly an improvement of above.
Agree with Gambit.

Why is anyone surprised? I predicted that Toyota will not build a Turbo version about a year ago. I also said back then that it would be Subaru that would offer a high performance version of the car. Toyota doesn't care about being the Alpha Male. They just want to push metal. When was the last time any Toyota was the outright performance leader in its class? What a lame car copmany.

I read the original Auto News article. It was one of those typical "Chart the Changes" previews of what the writer thinks is to come for the next couple years of a brand. No attribution or quotes. Nothing official. So just another round of speculation on the interwebs. As with any other car, if there's a business case for it, it will get built. If not, it won't. Nothing to see here. Move along.

How long do we have to wait for them not to deliver the car for it not to be considered "Speculation"? Speculation seems correct. There isn't a Turbo planned (we would know by now if there was). What happened to Toyota? Seems like the bean counters have taken over. The most they could do to attempt to satisfy the enthusiast is offer a fun but seriously underpowered car. Lame I tell you, lame.

So, this sounds like an opportunity for Honda to resurrect the S2000.

I hate bean-counters and cheapskates.
