Too Close For Comfort? Bentley SUV, Touareg, Cayenne and Q7 To Be Based On Same Platform
The Volkswagen Group is planning to use the same platform for models like the upcoming Bentley SUV and the future generations Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg.

The announcement hasn’t been made official just yet but this has been rumored ever since Bentley has unveiled his EXP 9 F SUV Concept a year ago. The brand new Volkswagen MLB platform is currently being used on the new generation of the Audi Q7, which will roll off the assembly line sometimes next year, and this should help it lose approximately 350 kg (771 lbs) thanks to the use of aluminum.

Agent009, why the stupid headline?

The upcoming Bentley SUV, Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 are intended to be based on the same platform. The whole reason for this is because when the Volkswagen Auto Group uses a single platform across its various brands, it saves money, which ends up saving the individual brands money as well.

Before the MLB and MQB the distinction between a Bentley and a Touareg would be more pronounced. A Bentley would be "superior" in some ways. So is there now going to be enough distinction between the two underneath to make a difference?

As long as each is tuned and designed to fit its brand core values it makes no difference...its when they don't (I mean you GM, FORD) then it stinks to high heaven.

The Bentley Continental Flying Spur shared a platform with the Volkswagen Phaeton and I don't think one person cared. No one will care that the Bentley SUV will share a platform. If someone is in the market for a Bentley SUV, that's what they'll buy.

Yep, the Phaeton and Conti GT/Flying Spur are on a single platform. Same with the Cayenne as it already shares its platform and some of its engines with the Touareg and Q7. The second generation Q7 is having its design fine tuned, Audi took its time with the second Q7 so I am sure the MLB Evo platform will be more than good enough.

Agent009, do you think a person who buys a Bentley SUV will feel like they bought a Touareg or will regret their decision because they know the Bentley shares its platform with other "less prestigious" brands such as Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen when the interior of their Bentley is dripping in leather, diamond-quilted seats, ulra-plush floormats and a flying B logo?

Newsflash: People who buy Bentleys don't know and if they know, don't care about platform sharing. It makes perfect business sense why platform sharing is being done so this whole concept of feeling "less special" is ridiculous.
