Audi Launches 2014 A3 1.6 TDI Ultra - Gets 74 MPG on U.S. Driving Cycle With Range of 932 Miles!
Just the Facts:

The fuel-stingy 2014 Audi A3 1.6 TDI Ultra debuted on Monday in Germany, but plans for a U.S. release are sketchy.

Audi AG says the A3 1.6 TDI Ultra returns 74 mpg when translated to the U.S. drive cycle.

The car's base price in Germany will be 25,200 Euros or the U.S. equivalent of $33,404.

INGOLSTADT, Germany — The mega-frugal 2014 Audi A3 1.6 TDI Ultra debuted on Monday in Germany, but plans for a U.S. introduction are sketchy.

Audi AG says the A3 1.6 TDI Ultra returns the equivalent of 74 mpg on the U.S. driving cycle, while the car's base price in Germany will be 25,200 Euros or the U.S. equivalent of $33,404.

Audi describes its first-ever Ultra-trim model as "the brand's most fuel-efficient production model." It goes on sale in Germany in September.

"The Ultra designation expresses the brand's all-encompassing commitment to systematic sustainability concerning production and products," said Audi AG in a statement.

Audi said it will unveil additional Ultra models in "coming months [in] other model lines featuring TDI (diesel) and TFSI (gasoline) engines." The Ultra designation will "constitute a third category in the brand's portfolio of cars," the automaker said.

An Audi of America spokesman, who asked not to be identified, told Edmunds there are no firm plans at this point for a U.S. release of the A3 1.6 TDI Ultra. Audi has confirmed that the new 2015 Audi A3 sedan will arrive in U.S. showrooms in the first quarter of next year.

The 2015 A3 sedan has been confirmed with several powertrain options for U.S. buyers, including a 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 2.0 TDI diesel and the high-performance S3 with a high-output 2.0 TFSI.

The Audi A3 1.6 TDI Ultra, which is available as a three-door compact or a five-door Sportback, has a range of 932 miles, according to the automaker. The fuel-miserly car accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds — perhaps one reason Audi may be reluctant about the A3 Ultra's appropriateness for the U.S. market — and has a top speed of 124 mph.

I am sure that Audi of America has their heads way too far up their asses to even consider offering this in the US. Heck, next year (with the new version A/S3) they are only importing sedans with automatics. Lame.

If Audi of America has decided to offer only the A3 sedan, it's unlikely they'll offer this 'ultra' variant of the A3 hatchback/sportback. If they do so, Audi will have to also offer other A3 hatchback/sportback variants in North America. [Though I'm not sure why Audi doesn't simply offer the A3 and A1 hatchback/sportback here -- which they do in China]

This ultra version is lighter and slightly faster in 0 to 100 km/h acceleration than Audi's regular A3 1.6 TDI, which is 100 lbs heavier.

Hrmm a German comparison pitted the 114d against a bigger 1.6 TDI A3 and lost? Especially when there's a direct competitor to the 1.6, the bmw 116d? That doesn't sound like the typical German, precise comparison, does it?

In the autoexpress comparison, the 116d beat the bigger 2.0 TDI:

Funny you mentioned petrol A3 models. The new S3 got a 7/10 on top gear, whereas the m135i got 9/10.

Same thing at car magazine, S3 got 4 stars and m135i got 5.

And again, at autocar.co.uk, s3 got 3 and half stars whereas the m135i got 4.

Funny you should mention the shitty rs3, autocar only gave it 3/5!

LOL, the BMW 114d is a direct competitor to the A3 1.6 TDI. As you can see from the specs in link, both sportback cars are turbocharged 4-cylinder engines with exactly 1598 cm3 (1.6 L) displacement and 6-speed manual. It's not audi's fault that its technological superiority yields more horsepower and torque than the technologically inferior BMW -- or that the Audi is more fuel efficient and less polluting than the BMW. Bottom line, you're blowing smoke (that's why you need delusional Bimmer fanboys to vote for you, lol).

Green Machine: Use your common sense: who would know more about making, reviewing, testing and driving German cars -- the Germans or the British?

That's why the combined circulation of all British car mags is less than the individual circulation of each of the two largest German car mags (Auto Motor und Sport and Autobild), which happen to be the two largest car mags in Europe. Autocar is only the number ninth car mag in terms of motoring mag circulation in Britain, Car Magazine is only sixth, Auto Express is fifth. [Btw, you're not comparing apples to apples: your top gear and autocar tests of the S3 were 'first drive' reports while the m135 was a full review]

Don't waste our time with your cherry picking of small British car mags.
- why didn't you tell us that WhatCar (second largest British car mag) chose the Audi A3 Sportback as its CAR OF THE YEAR.

- Or that WhatCar rates the Audi A3 hatchback as its top small family car -- while BMW 1 Series was in fourth place.

Which intelligent person would care what grade a 'shitty' little car mag like Autocar gave the old RS3? This RS3 is from the old second generation A3 family that ended its production last year. Despite this, the old RS3 five-door Sportback still achieved a time of 8:20 min on the Nurburgring track, compared to the 300 lb lighter three-door 2012 M135 coupe's 8:18 min -- both cars were driven by Nurburgring expert and supercar tester Horst von Saurma. Von Saurma concluded that the RS3 has a "huge potential for fun" in all conditions. Remember, the M135 coupe is the current generation (2011 to present) while the RS3 is the previous generation (2003 to 2012) that ended production in 2012.

Some years ago I rented a diesel Audi A3 for a week in southern Spain. It was a blast to drive and got something like 600 miles to a tank.
