Battle Of The Half Pints: Mercedes A45 AMG vs Audi S3 vs BMW M135i - Which Is Best?
Within months of each other, the big three premium German carmakers have released their own £30k-plus hot hatch. All boast turbocharged engines and 300bhp, but which is best: Mercedes A45 AMG, Audi S3, or BMW M135i? Read on for the definitive CAR verdict.
A new breed of fast family car

We used to be driving ourselves dizzy up here in trick Mitsubishi Lancer Evos and Subaru Imprezas on steroids, relatively affordable fast cars that loomed large inside our heads and on our bedroom walls. Ten years on, however, the once untouchable four-door Japanese batmobiles are about as en vogue as a Nokia 3110 mobile phone or Rio MP3 player. Instead, the compact crackerjacks most petrolheads embrace in 2013 still can be had with four doors, four-wheel drive and turbocharged four-cylinder engines, but they are no longer street-legal derivatives of rally-bred icons made in the Far East. It’s Deutschland über Alles these days, premium eclipsing mainstream, Freude durch Kraft dressed up in more socially acceptable formats. Offering a similar mix of exciting dynamics, engineering excellence and fire-breathing performance, the latest masters of the super-GTI segment are the 296bhp Audi S3, the 316bhp BMW M135i, and the new (and utterly rampant) 355bhp Mercedes A45 AMG. Gentlemen, start your engines for a two-day, no-holds-barred shootout on the Dolomites’ finest tyre-shredding, brake-eating turf.

The A45 is a beast, too bad it's so ugly...

Comparing apples to oranges here. The AMG should have been compared to the M2 and RS3.

Well go find the M2. Don't you think if the M2 were production ready it would be in the test? Anyway it seems like the A45 is quite a beast. It has won every test I've read. I will be glad when amg decides to fix the gearbox like they did in the SLS black.

Personally, I'd be happy if they brought any of these 3 to the US.

When M2 comes Out MB will start to redesign the A45 , and seems to me that BMW will use a 6 cylinder on it...and that will rise the question again: apples to oranges ? Good job MB.

This Car Mag test is not definitive: George Karcher did not compare apples with apples since he was too incompetent to get an S3 with dual clutch transmission (though the future RS3 will be the more appropriate Audi to compare with that Mercedes).

Georg Kacher: "The rivals? As luck would have it, not all cars arrived in the required specification, which resulted in the widest possible variety of drivetrain and suspension options. Our S3 was one of the few specimens not fitted with the desirable dual-clutch S-tronic transmission."
It's not luck -- each manufacturer usually sends whatever car is specified by the car mag reviewer (S3 with dual-clutch transmission should be the more . So it's likely that Karcher/CarMag deliberately asked for the S3 manual transmission or they sloppily asked for an S3 without giving specifications. I've seen this excuse before from Karcher where he compares apples and oranges -- cars with inconsistent specs (e.g., transmission) or different types (e..g., sedan, sportback, wagon)

The other German car mag testers liked the S3 with dual clutch transmission. There is a difference in the driving responses of the the S3 with manual transmission driven by Karcher and the S3 with dual-clutch transmission that should have been used in his comparison. In 0 to 100 km/h acceleration, Audi rates the 300 hp S3 with the S-tronic 6-speed transmission to reach 62 mph in 4.8 seconds (fuel efficiency 6.9 l/100 km, kerb weight: 1490 kg, 41,100 euros) -- and Audi tends to understate the acceleration, horsepower and torque of its cars (Audi says the manual transmission does it in 5.2 seconds, fuel efficiency 7.0 l/100 km, kerb weight: 1470 kg, 39,200 euros). That dual clutch transmission was important because the 360 hp Mercedes A 45 AMG 4Matic (with AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission) is claimed to accelerate in 4.6 sec and the 320 hp BMW M135i (8-speed Steptronic sports automatic transmission) in 4.9 sec.

Pity that Audi is not bringing the S3/A3 three door hatchback or S3/A3 five-door sportback to North America (or for that matter Mercedes and BMW bringing their cars as well)

(in the 'timed' laps, the M135 sprinted past the finish line but the S3 braked to a stop at the finish line (thus losing a few seconds).
