Toyota Exploring Two Sports Cars To Slot Below FT86

Toyota is studying the possibility of a smaller rear-wheel drive sports car to sit below the Toyota 86 as part of its three sports car family.

Speaking to CarAdvice at the one-year anniversary event of the Toyota 86 in Canberra, Tatsuya Tada, the program’s chief engineer and the man in charge of Toyota’s sports car division, confirmed work on the smaller and larger sports car has already started.

“Akio Toyoda always says to me, Toyota sports car [family] should be three sports car brothers. 86 is in the middle.” Tada said.

I definitely agree with you on this one. Toyota/Scion definitely need more power for the FT86 and FRS. I would like to see a turbo or twin turbo version of the FT86 and FRS with 280-300 hp.

Currently I would rather paid a little more and get the Nissan 370Z instead of the FT86 or FRS that has 332 hp, 270+ lbs. of torques and look better as well. And it's very fun sports car to drive as well.

And yes Toyota definitely need to bring back the Toyota Supra. Nissan has the Nissan GT-R that pretty much destroy almost any super sports car out there and it's cheaper as well. Acura is bring back the Acura NSX and it like it's going to be a fun super sports car to drive. So Toyota bring back the Toyota Supra ASAP!!!

Please don't tease us with that great MR2...they don't build 'em like that anymore. No one would even understand the mid-engine layout these days.

Uh..did you read beyond the first paragraph of the article?

Tada mentioned that the FT86 will be slotted in the "middle" of the three, so he's basically hinting at MR2 on one end and a Supra at the other. Not much different from the MR2/Celica/Supra lineup of the 90's.

There's hope for Toyota still...if they actually go through with this.
