Lexus RC F To Retail For Over $100K? Too Much For A M4 Killer?

Lexus RC F To Retail For Over $100K? Too Much For A M4 Killer?
Set to premiere at Detroit in January, the Lexus RC F will take over halo car duties from the LFA.

First the good news: Lexus is currently hard at work developing its challenger to the new BMW 4 Series and M4, the RC and the high-performance RC F. Our spy photographers managed to snap a few images of the latter testing at the Nurburgring a few weeks back, and from the sound of things, it’s going to be a hell of a car.

An inside Lexus source told Motor Trend a few details recently, and BMW may have reason to worry. The RC F will be powered by a 5.0-liter V8 that’ll generate around 455 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque.

Priced in M6 territory but with 100 less and 100 ft lbs of torque less. Good luck.

Something just doesn't make sense about that price/model strategy. The base car will start at $40k but the "F" version will more than double that and be considered the brand's halo car?

I'm pretty sure the "competition" doesn't give a shit about a $100000+ Lexus that competes on paper (and if it's lucky, on the road) with their $65000 offerings.

This new Lexus RC F had better be fast enough and sporty enough to warrant a $100,000 plus price tag -- and not be the relative disappointment the latest Lexus IS was. Audi, BMW and Mercedes all have better engines (than the Lexus 5.0-liter V8, around 455 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque) to drop into a new or existing coupe.

The new Lexus RC F shouldn't aim too low by aspiring to be a "BMW M4 killer". The M4 hasn't proven itself yet as it isn't in production.

First, the Audi R8 has already beaten the Lexus LFA (the LFA is about twice the price of the R8). BMW has no car that competes with the R8 or LFA.
http://tinyurl.com/kv88n2c
http://tinyurl.com/kv88n2c

Second, the new BMW 435i does not bode well for the future M4. The new BMW 435i coupe was rated slightly worse than the facelifted Audi S5/A5 and facelifted Audi S4 in the individual tests of a German car mag (Auto News Germany), which indicates the new 435i isn't much better than the 335i.

http://tinyurl.com/mahmydj
http://tinyurl.com/kl7vdmm

Third, the BMW M3 Coupe (M4's predecessor) wasn't the best in its class.

- On the benchmark Nurburgring track, the Audi RS5 Coupe has twice broken the 8-min barrier while the BMW M3 Coupe failed to do this. The M3 was six seconds slower than both RS5 cars as well as four seconds behind the Mercedes C 63 AMG PP (all four cars were driven by the same supercar tester Horst von Saurma).
http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/nordschleife.html

No wonder the largest German and European car mag Autobild considers the RS5 a better coupe than the BMW650i, which can easily cost above $100,000 with a few options.
http://tinyurl.com/oynmq4c

- Even worse, in a 2012 Autobild competition where four cars lapped six German racetracks, the BMW M3 Coupe with Competition Package was dead last, even coming in 25.7 seconds behind the behind the Audi TT RS Plus Coupe. In fact, the M3 was dead last in every race track.

The funny thing is this price and being front-engine and the fact that it's Japanese is going to invite comparison to the GT-R which is probably not going to end up in the Lexus's favor given that it can't hope to match the Nissan in performance and that makes the "F" badge just about worthless because I imagine that everything it would score points on compared to the GT-R would also be found in the non-F variants (comfort, reliability, etc.). And Satriani really needs to just disappear, what is with these nonstop walls of tinyurl links to german audi stuff on every page ever.

Sciros: For someone who ignorantly thinks this generation BMW M5 is an "epic car", use your brains for once: skip my posts if it offends your BMW fanboy mind. No one forces you to read anything except yourself... and it's delusional for you to lie that it appears "on every page ever".

Satriani1: ..There was a time when BMW was called the Ultimate driving machine...

Yonder: I never could understand the hype and illusion of BMWs being called the 'ultimate driving machines' given their poor performance on the benchmark Nurburgring tracl.

Take a look at the Nurburgring track laptimes -- which of the big German brand have broken the 8 min barrier the most?
Porsche: 33
Mercedes: 9
Audi: 6
BMW: 3 (the M3 GTS and CSL are limited edition lighter weight cars, and the M5 was a pre-production model that no one knows how it was set up or which BMW factory driver drove it)
http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/nordschleife.html

No non-limited edition production BMW has ever broken the 8-minute barrier at Nurburgring (the M5 did 7:55 min -- but it was not a production car as this laptime was done three months before the M5 was even first shown to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show -- and it was driven by a factory driver, not an independent tester/driver. When supercar tester and Nurburgring expert Horst von Saurma tried to break the 8 min barrier with a production M5, he couldn't -- he managed only 8:05 and he could not do a proper second run because the M5 had overheated tires and brake fade. And this guy had set a few records for fastest production car on the Nurburgring and has driven a Lamborghini Aventador at 7:25 at Nurburgring).

Porsche deserves the accolade of ultimate driving machine. And both Mercedes and Audi have done better than BMW.

The Lexus RC F should be aiming higher than a BMW. Aim for Porsche... even if it misses, it will probably be a better product than expected.

Porsche 918 Spyder on the Nurburgring track: driven by Walter Rohrl (Porsche's senior test driver and rally racing legend). A good visual view of the Nurburgring. Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb later drove a pre-production Porsche 918 Spyder at a time of 7:14 on the Nurburgring.

Porsche Carrera GT vs. GT2 RS. The Carrera GT was driven by the Porsche senior test driver (and rally racing legend ) Walter Rohrl who helped develop it. The GT2 RS was driven by Marc Lieb, the former German racing driver and now Porsche test driver.

ludicrous price. especially considering that the base model with a crappy little 200hp engine and a price of $40,000 will end up being 90% of sales. who's going to pay $100k for it when they could buy a host of amazing cars for that money?

at $60k they compete on value against stronger competitors. just like the ISF. that's where it should be priced.

The base model will not have a 200hp engine. It'll either have a turbo, which no one knows the power of yet, but everyone except Audi seems to be able to get more than 200 hp out of a 2.0L turbo. Or it'll come with the hybrid, which in the IS300h is 220hp. That's if they do a base model below the RC350.

And the RC-F won't cost $100,000. (see below.)

I'm starting to wonder if somewhere, some wires got crossed on this report. Remember, Lexus had two concepts recently, the RC and the LF-C. I think it might make more sense that the LF-C would have a starting price in 6-digits.

Once again Autospies and its posters fail Internet 101. The original article, which this linked carbuzz.com article doesn't even reference, was written in Australia. The current IS-F costs over 100,000 AUS dollars, as this new RC-F will. In Australia. Meaning in America, the new RC-F will cost over 60,000 US dollars.

Let me repeat. This is not American pricing. The RC-F will be priced over 60,000 US dollars, not 100,000.

http://www.motoring.com.au/news/2013/sports/lexus/lexus-rc-f-coupe-to-pack-339kw-v8-38109
"a starting price somewhere between that of the new IS sedan ($55,900) and BMW’s upcoming 4 Series ($73,200), while the fire-breathing RC F will be priced not far away from the outgoing IS F sedan ($126,300)."

Get it?

Today currant exchange rate of Aussie dollar to U.S. dollar puts 100k Austrialian = $91,560.00, the conversion rate is 1.00 AUD, = 0.920207 USD. far from 60K.

C'mon you can do better than that. It's not just exchange rate. Cars are priced differently in different parts of the world for a variety of factors. The current IS-F costs AUS$126,300. That's why they are saying the RC-F will cost over $100,000. It's really quite simple.

The car will redefine the segment and send everyone back to the drawing board just like the LF-A did.

This will have to be priced close to the ///M3 and C63. $100K USD it wont be.
