Production R8 In Detail: History, Rumor and Conjecture

One of the most anticipated new cars from Audi is also probably the most exclusive since the homologation special Sport quattro. Audi’s new R8, a mid-engined, aluminum-made, exotic has its debut firmly scheduled for Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 4:00 PM Paris time. That’s 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time for those marking their calendars.

And it’s guessed that plenty of calendars are being marked. The buzz on this car seems to be extending well beyond the camp of the four-ring loyalists. We’ve seen theories, snippets, spy photos and more on just about any website or magazine covering the auto industry, and a few that don’t even cover cars. I wish the Avus concept car's distinct wheel wells and fenders could have made it to the R8. Nevertheless, it is still a fine looking machine.

it is a cool looking car ... is this car going to be priced over $100k? If so, that is going to be some hard company to break into ... If I personally am going to spend in the mid 100's or so, lamborghini, porsche, aston martin are on the top of my list for a sport coupe ...

It will do fine, the M6 costs 100k and this will look better and have the same acceleration and higher cornering and "racing" performance. Also in the article you can see the least camoed front, it looks really good, the head lights are very aggresive.

Very nice, very unique. The story is that it will be price very close to 100K because they don't want to get into Lamborghini territory. Also, they plan to dial back a little on outright power for the same reason. Either way, very distinctive styling and sounds awesome!
