New Details Emerge of 2015 Audi A4 - 220 Pound Weight Reduction Due to MLB Platform and Gas, Diesel, Electric and Hybrid Models
Audi will offer its fifth-generation A4, due in 2015, with three new plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

The move is a bid to pitch the model as the most high-tech and fuel-efficient car in the fiercely competitive compact executive segment.

Petrol-electric and diesel-electric plug-in hybrids will be offered in the new BMW 3-series rival, featuring latest-generation four-wheel drive, eight-speed automatic gearboxes and an electric-only range of up to 31 miles.

The new A4, codenamed B9, is also set to become the first conventional steel monocoque Audi model to use the company’s MLB (modular longitudinal architecture) platform to significantly benefit from a range of weight-saving initiatives, including aluminium panels. Sources report a 100kg reduction in kerb weight for the base-level A4, droppping it to 1330kg.

New saloon and Avant models of the A4 are due to reach the UK in April 2015, with an Allroad variant to follow later in the year. Successors to the A5 coupé, cabriolet and Sportback will follow in 2016.

The car has been styled under the direction of Audi design boss Wolfgang Egger. Insiders privy to the final design say it will be evolutionary, albeit with heavily updated detailing.

Distinguishing features include a newly styled 3D-effect single-frame grille, trapezoidal LED headlamps, more heavily creased bumpers and a prominent shoulder line running the length of the flanks. Sharper creases will also feature on the bodywork.

what a BS. A4 is 1650kg - 100kg savings. That is 1550kg NOT 1330kg.
Nothing specular. It will be nose heavy with death steering as always.

Genesee is wrong, just jumping to conclusions without first finding out the facts.

Autocar is obviously referring to Europe, where the current base A4 is Audi A4 1.8 TFSI (120 HP).
- 6 speed manual transmission is 1505 kg.... weight drops to 1405 kg (assuming 100 kg or 220 lb weight savings is accurate).
- multitronic transmission is 1540 kg.... weight drops to 1440 kg

It's likely that Autocar's reference to a 1330 kg car is referring to the base model of the next gen A4 which will have the lighter 1.4 TFSI engine (probably from the A3). This engine is not in the current A4 generation.

Genesee is just wildly speculating "it will be nose heavy with death steering as always" without any facts. No one has any clue how the next gen A4 will drive since the car has not yet been unveiled.

However, given quality of the newer A6, A8 and A3 models, it's likely Audi will develop a new gen A4 that will be the best in its class.

Regardless, this Motor Trend clip provides an educational comparison of the current Audi S4 (before facelift) against the current BMW 335i. MT's road test editor Carlos Lago concluded that the Audi wins because it is the more exciting, more involving and more playful car -- his words. This is the current generation A4 series, not even the next gen.

Thus it shouldn't surprise to discover that in a comparison, Car and Driver mag assessed the Audi S6 as having better steering and being more "fun to drive" than the BMW M5

200 lbs is not impressive but still a step in the right direction

We don't know how accurate is Autocar's information since the German car mags have not reported this yet.

But if Autocar is accurate on the weight and engines of the next gen A4, then it seems that Audi has structured the new A3/S3 sedan and next gen A4 to topple the BMW 3 Series.

To get a smarter idea of what a 100 kg (220.50 lb) weight reduction means, we need to compare an A4 model with a rival car...

Current Audi A4 2.0 TFSI (220 HP)
- FWD with multitronic transmission is 3,516 lbs (1,595 kg)
- AWD quattro with 6-speed manual transmission is 3,627 lbs (1,645 kg)
- AWD quattro with 8-speed manual transmission is 3,693 lbs (1,675 kg)

Next gen Audi A4 2.0 TFSI (220 HP) weight drops 220.50 lbs
- FWD with multitronic transmission is 3,296 lbs (1,495 kg)
- AWD quattro with 6-speed manual transmission is 3,407 lbs (1,545 kg)
- AWD quattro with 8-speed manual transmission is 3,473 lbs (1,575 kg))

Current BMW 328i xDrive sedan
- automatic transmission is 3,595 lbs

Current BMW 328i sedan
- manual transmission is 3,360 lbs
- automatic transmission is 3,410 lbs

Oops, I mis-wrote. I meant to say that the next gen Audi A4 2.0 TFSI (220 HP)quattro with 8-speed AUTOMATIC transmission -- its weight drops to 3,473 lbs.

This Audi will be lighter than the current BMW 328i xDrive sedan with automatic transmission, which is 3,595 lbs

This Audi will be only 63 lbs more than the current BMW 328i sedan with automatic transmission, which is 3,410 lbs.
