Audi may produce the Sport Quattro Concept
At the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Audi will unveil the Sport Quattro Concept plug-in hybrid but what’s more interesting is that the vehicle could become a low-volume series model. At least according to Automotive News.

No doubt every unit of a limited production of the Audi Sport Quattro will be gobbled up, even at prices higher than the R8 GT. I expect this car to break the three second barrier to 100 km/h (62 mph), have more luxury than an R8 and RS7, and possibly be more fun to drive than an R8.

This latest Sport Quattro Concept is apparently based on the RS7's platform (the 2010 Quattro concept was based on the RS5's platform) -- but it is expected to be very much lighter.

Motor Trend's Carlos Lago drives the Audi RS7 to 310 km/h (193 mph) like an "asshole" on the German Autobahn, visits Audi's performance division Quattro Gmbh...

It would be interesting for Motor Trend and Car&Driver to do an instrumented test on the RS7 to see it's real-world numbers on acceleration, quarter-mile, Figure Eight, slalom, etc. The RS7's slightly heavier sibling the RS6 outran a Caterham seven 485R on a drag strip (Caterham rates the 485 at 3.4 seconds). And Auto Motor und sport has tested the RS7 at 3.5 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph).

Audi's Quattro division has talked about making a lighter and even more powerful and faster RS7 Plus in the future. The line-up of RS7, RS7 Plus and Sport Quattro would be stunning.

Now if only Audi would use all that know how to make a low-cost stunning car for people who aren't willing to pay more than $60,000. Some variant of the RS3 perhaps.

Oops, I meant to say: "And Auto Motor und sport has tested the RS6 at 3.5 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph)."

Autopinion: The last RS3 would have probably cost around $50,000 in U.S. (but it wasn't sold in U.S), so the next RS3 will probably start around $50,000 to $55,000. Even with a 400 HP engine, the next RS3 cannot justify costing much more than the current S4's $49,900.

I'm thinking of something slightly better and slightly faster than the next RS3 or even current TT RS Plus (the latter's turbocharged 2.5L TFSI engine with 360-hp and 343 lb-ft of torque hits 62-mph in 4.1 seconds) -- something labelled as an R3 or R4 or Quattro coupe and convertible at least. It should be as gorgeous as the R8 (but doesn't need to be a mini-version of the R8) and different in design from the RS3. It should feel as good driving as and be faster than a Porsche Cayman R.

It has to cost under $60,000 -- or even slightly lower to make it an accessible car to more people. [The TT RS Plus (not sold here) would probably cost around $61,000 (manual) and $63,000 (dual-clutch) had it been sold in the U.S. (only the TTS is available in U.S.).]

As for the RS7, Audi USA is already advertising it at US$104,900 (while Audi Canada is C$115,000). At this price, this car will be gobbled up. In a drag race, the RS7 should be faster than the $280,000 first generation Lamborghini Murcielago from 2006.

Based on the RS6 (see link), the RS7 will be faster than the Lambo Murcielago to 60 mph (96 km/h), even faster to 100 mph (160 km/h), and even faster to 150 mph (240 km/h) -- the RS6 appears to accelerate at a faster rate than the first gen Lambo. That Lambo's 572 hp 6.2L V-12 engine powered the car to 60 mph in 3.3 to 3.8 seconds, 100 mph in 8.3 seconds, 150 mph in 21.4 seconds, quarter mile in 11.7 sec @122 mph to 12.6 seconds at 116 mph.
