0-60 In Under 5 Seconds? Volkswagen Officially Announces 300HP 2014Golf R For 2014
Swiftly following yesterday’s teaser, the Wolfsburg based company introduced its most powerful seventh generation Golf to date – the 2014 Golf R.

Up until now, since its release last year Golf has been only treated to the GTI performance related variants and Volkswagen seemed really keen on focusing on the efficient low-power consumption, hybrid and electric offsprings of the Golf.

Our hearts are back in place now, as the company released the first official details and photos with the bad attitude performance loving “R” version, due for a timely public debut in Frankfurt next month at IAA 2013.

As usual, the 2014 Golf R is more powerful than its predecessor, with the familiar 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine churning out 300 bhp (221 kW), 30 more than what offered last generation. Also, the company evidences that its also 18% more fuel efficient – ok, good info, but who will really buy it for that?!

DSG continues to make the case for why should I buy a manual?

Surprise, suprise. I guess Satriana was right about what VW/Audi is doing. Looking forward to the S3 as I prefer getting an Audi interior once a car starts getting pricey.

Think Satriani...

If VW rates the Golf R with DSG to do 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 sec.... it will be rated to do 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 sec or 4.8 sec.

There's some confusion even in the German car mags about how fast the manual transmission Golf R is rated by VW. I'm guessing it's probably 5.3 seconds... instead of 5.1 seconds. The 300 hp, 380 Nm torque engines are probably almost the same in the Golf and the S3, though the two cars would have some differences in drive, luxury and weight. Audi rates the S3 hatchback at 5.2 sec manual and 4.8 sec DSG for 0 to 100 km/h.

Regardless, the Golf R manual should be about as fast as an S3 manual. Here are the test data and specs of the S3 manual. Before 180 km/h, the S3 DSG will likely have faster times than the S3 manual.

NeoReaper: Thanks much, but no need to apologize. I was kidding about the typo... in order to slip in a music vid about the real dude.

The VW is too much of a "sleeper" for me. Very understated and boring look. Some people dig that though.

There is a certain appeal when your unassuming German sedan destroys a riced out Z car in an impromptu drag race.

Sort of like talking quietly but carrying a big stick?

Well I suppose seeing as I'm expecting a Forester XT delivered soon-ish I shouldn't be talking. I suppose to me personally the VW R just doesn't seem "right" in the Midwestern USA and that's where I live. It's fast but nobody here is going to drag race you and if they do they'll probably win because they'll be driving a new 5.0 or RS5 or something. And there aren't _any_ epic winding roads in sight unless you drive 1.5 hours out of town.

If I were to live in Japan or something, the VW R would be _perfect_. Small for fitting in tight parking spaces. Probably drives amazing on winding hilly roads which are _everywhere_ over there.

Still slower than my SRT-4... and many times more expensive. Amclaussen.
