German car mag test: Tesla Model S Performance vs new Mercedes S 500 long wheelbase vs facelifted BMW 750Li long wheelbase

Auto Zeitung car mag's conclusion: "In our shortened test scheme, the Tesla Model S scored eight first places, a second place and three third places to take it to first place, while the new Mercedes S-Class and the BMW 7 share second place. There is enthusiasm for the Tesla's clever body and the innovative operating concept, especially the E-drive - the range is enormous for an electric car. Mercedes and BMW score with premium comfort features and a high level of security, otherwise they come a surprisingly close second to the Tesla."

Interesting response, but I thought that the Model S was meant to compete with the 5-series and E-Class, not the 7/S.

Actually the Model S is a four-door hatchback sports sedan whose dimensions and specs are closer to the Audi S7, Porsche Panamera GTS, Mercedes CLS 500 and 650i Gran Coupe.

I'me not sure where this comparison of the Model S against the German flagships started, but this is not the first time a newsmedia article has mentioned the Model S along with the A8, S or 7. I guess Autozeitung wanted to make the comparison to see how much of a paradigm shift was created by the Model S.

But an S7, for example, simply outruns and is more luxurious than a Model S Performance, at a lower price.

The pre-facelifted Audi A8 already had a hybrid 2.0 TFSI (245 hp) in both short and long wheelbases. That hybrid A8 beat the outgoing Mercedes S-Class hybrid in German comparison tests.

The facelifted Audi A8's hybrid model is expected to be upgraded to a plug-in with a 252-hp 3.0 V6 gasoline engine.

We'll see whether German comparison tests over the next six months suggest the S-Class takes the throne from the Audi A8 that has reigned on the throne the past three years.

In the looks department, the facelifted A8's tasteful design enhancements (especially its new grille, new headlights, new tailights, sharper bympers) puts the A8's exterior styling on par with the new Mercedes S Class (whose headlights seem inspired by Audi's headlight innovations on the 2007 A5 and 2009 A8). Personal taste will ultimately decide whether full-size luxury car buyers choose one car over the other car.

The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI has a curb weight of just 1,830 kilograms (4,034.46 lb) -– best in class for models with all-wheel drive. The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI is 125 KG (275 lbs) lighter than the Mercedes S 350 Bluetec (rear-wheel drive).... and it is 220 KG (485 lbs) lighter than an S 500 4Matic (all-wheel drive). The Audi's aluminium ‘Space Frame' design body "weighs in at just 231kg... as such, it should help make the engine tweaks that much more acute." (according to Top Gear).
