Toyota Giving Up On Aftermarket - Readies To Boost FT86 Power On Its Own
Toyota is preparing a power boost for its popular 86 sports coupe.

The Japanese brand has teased numerous concepts of its two-door cult car with upgraded engines, including a supercharged TRD version built in the United States and a twin-charged (supercharged and turbo charged) version created by its in-house skunkworks Gazoo Racing.

But it has always maintained those were designed to showcase the ability for aftermarket tuners and were not suitable for mainstream production.

Now, the chief engineer of the 86, Tetsuya Tada, has finally admitted his team is developing a number of ways to increase performance of the showroom version; one of which will definitely make it to production when the 86 receives its mid-life upgrade in 2015.

Not really shocked about this. While they are giving ideas, none have been street legal. Looks at the Germans and you see ECU HP mods everywhere, look for Toyota ECU mods and you see nothing.

The death grip on the ECU has killed the aftermarket for Toyota.

Dear Toyota,

The reason no one is putting money into developing parts, beyond the usual pieces(intake, exhaust, etc.), is that there is not a market for it at the present time.

By making the FT86/Scion FRS a "limited production" vehicle and pricing it at the upper-limits of what your target demographic can afford, you have effectively retarded the growth/development of a third-party performance marketplace.

Why dump $5k+ on force induction and violate part(s) of your warranty when you can choose between several competing stock models that are cheaper and offer more hp?

Are you kidding, there's at least 6 turbo kits and 4 or 5 superchargers offered right now. Most around the 4000- 6000 range you gotta pay to play. The ecu is being flashed even tho its just ecutek right now. New flashes have smoothed out the stock torque dip and e85 tunes are putting the whp at 200. There are multiple cars running 600 horsepower numbers on turbos or 250 torque supercharged. Were just a year in to development it takes time and this car has had more aftermarket support in the past 12 months than the current M3 or the RX8 saw through its entire production. What rwd coupes with proper rear suspension are on the market right now?
