If You Were Chevrolet, How Would You Attract Younger Buyers To The Corvette?
How good can life be?

Just remove the hardtop roof panel of a new Corvette Stingray, punch the accelerator to fully absorb the reassuring rumble of its V-8 and feel the wind in your hair. You may find the answer.

Chevrolet has completely updated its famous sports car in a bid for more respect among world-class sports cars, and with an eye to attracting new and younger fans and buyers. The 2014 Corvette aims valiantly to shed an image of being the embodiment of the Ugly American — powerful yet unrefined and fat.

How do you attract young buyers? Give them $60,000. This is not a cheap car and I don't know very many "young buyers" who can do much better than a Mazda 3 or maybe an Accord if they're really kicking ass. A 2-seater weekend toy (let's be honest it's very hard to live life with a Vette as your only means of going or taking anything from point A to point B 365 days of the year) for $60k is not in their sights until they are NO LONGER young, if then!

The problem with all of these cars being expensive is that they're all driven by old people, because that's who has the disposable income to park a Corvette in their garage. And in the US, that is very likely to be "old and out of shape people". And the Corvette is bought almost entirely by Americans. So as a result most of its owners are "old and out of shape people". Incidentally I find this is also the case with Porsche in America. And with very expensive Mustangs and Camaros. It's the same story.

The Vette really is also a "2nd car" kind of vehicle. Even the young and well-to-do are unlikely to buy it if they have to now worry about 2 parking spots for their downtown flat or driving their kids and/or dog around. So they opt for a nice 4-seater, maybe the ATS if they don't mind GM; the rest will grab a BMW or Audi or something.

I'm kind of ranting. But this car, no matter how sexy and epic (and it is sexy and epic, and I felt that way about the C5 as well, and then the C6, and definitely now the C7), just does not make sense on paper for like 99% of young folks who are in the market for something on 4 wheels.

Besides the demographic that typically buys them, high purchase price and insane insurance rates are what keep younger buyers away from the Corvette.

Unless you have a family or live in your car, the Vette is big enough for most people, especially if you buy most of your stuff online, to live with as a daily commuter. It gets better gas mileage than a lot cars with considerably less performance and the ride isn't bad.

Appeal to the parents who will be making the payments. I don't think the 'Vette fits the bill.

As soon as I saw the article title, I knew the answer was "Lower the price". "Younger" buyers can't afford a $60,000 car. I can, and I still wouldn't pay that much.

Who buys a Porsche Boxster? All of the above applies to the Boxster/Cayman, but I'm sure the demo is younger than that of the Corvette. It's the image that the Corvette connotes -- gold chains, toupee, gaudy Rolexes, etc. -- that keep the younger, affluent audience going for the German brands. The C7 is an amazing car. But its appeal is limited by its (now unfair) association with Camaros, Mustangs and American muscle cars.

By "younger buyers" do they mean people in their 30's rather than their 60's? :)

How? By making an all-electric version to compete with the SLS ED and adding a 20" touch-screen console ;)

i love the new corvette and would really consider it over the M3 which i have now if it was a 2+2..
i cant afford having 2 cars and if im going to have one in that price range, it has to be somewhat practical...
with 2 kids, the M3 just makes more sense.. ( and i dont want a camaro/ mustang)
