Audi's press release follows:

Composure redefined – the Audi A8

- Audi is honing the character of its flagship model
- More powerful engines, new assistance systems and innovative Matrix LED headlight technology
- Fuel consumption reductions across the board

Systematic lightweight construction, excellent comfort and a broad portfolio of high-end technologies: Audi has given its flagship, the A8, a wide-sweeping update. The engines are even more powerful and efficient, while new assistance systems and the innovative Matrix LED headlights provide for an added level of composure.

The new A8 places Audi among the innovation leaders in the luxury segment. One great strength of the big sedan is its lightweight construction. The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI with the normal wheelbase has a curb weight of just 1,830 kilograms (4,034.46 lb) – best-in-class for models with all-wheel drive. The body is made almost entirely of aluminum; an Audi Space Frame (ASF) design, it weighs just 231 kilograms (509.27 lb).

Length (5.14 meters [16.86 ft]), wheelbase (2.99 meters [9.81 ft]), width (1.95 meters [6.40 ft]) and height (1.46 meters [4.79 ft]) remain unchanged, making the Audi A8 the sportiest sedan in the segment. The A8 L gains an additional 13 centimeters (5.12 in) in both length and wheelbase. Both body variants feature a new trunk layout for easier loading. Additional noise damping measures reduce the already low interior noise level even further.

The dynamic design of the big sedan has become even more expressive. The engine hood, the Singleframe grille and the front bumper are even more sculptured; the lower edge of the headlight units is straight. In the German market, LED headlights are standard in all models with a V8 engine. Audi also offers optional headlights featuring Matrix LED technology, which sets new benchmarks with respect to design and technology. With these headlights, the high-beam comprises 25 individual light-emitting diodes per unit that can be switched on and off or dimmed individually depending on the situation.

This enables the headlight system to react extremely precisely to other vehicles while always brightly illuminating the road. Additional features of the new headlights are the intelligent cornering light, new-look daytime running lights and dynamic turn signals. The lighting system in the A8 uses predictive route data from the navigation system to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation. In combination with the optional Navigation plus with MMI touch, the system recognizes route data contained in the navigation system, such as curves and road classifications.

The LED lamps at the rear of the new Audi A8 have also become flatter. In all models except the S8, the redesigned bumper houses two rhomboid tailpipes. New chrome strips and high-gloss black window frames round out the differentiating design details. There is a choice of twelve colors, including five new ones. Wheels are available in sizes up to 21 inches.

The engines: more power and efficiency
Audi offer the A8 on the German market with two gasoline and two diesel engines. These are the supercharged 3.0 TFSI with 228 kW (310 hp), the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI with 320 kW (435 hp), the highly efficient 3.0 TDI clean diesel with 190 kW (258 hp) and the extremely high-torque 4.2 TDI clean diesel, which produces 283 kW (385 hp) and 850 Nm (626.93 lb-ft).

Performance has increased with most engines. When paired with quattro all-wheel drive, the 4.0 TFSI now accelerates the A8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds. Under partial load, the Audi cylinder on demand (COD) system deactivates four of the eight cylinders. The most efficient engine is the 3.0 TDI clean diesel, which consumes just 5.9 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (39.87 US mpg), which corresponds to 155 grams CO2 per kilometer (249.45 g/mile) All engines satisfy the Euro 6 standard. Friction-reducing measures reduce consumption by as much as 10 percent.

These variants are joined by three additional models. The top-of-the-line model is the luxuriously equipped Audi A8 L W12 quattro. Its gasoline engine is particularly short and lightweight thanks to its W layout. Displacing 6.3 liters, it produces 368 kW (500 hp). It also boasts best-in-class fuel consumption of 11.7 liters per 100 kilometers (20.10 US mpg), corresponding to 270 grams CO2 per kilometer (434.52 g/mile). It also has a COD system that was designed specifically for it. At low load, it deactivates the fuel injection and ignition for six cylinders. The available Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) ensures excellent acoustic comfort.

With 380 kW (520 hp), the S8 is Audi's big sports sedan. Paired with quattro all-wheel drive, its sonorous 4.0 TFSI accelerates the S8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.2 seconds. Average fuel consumption for the S8 is just 10.1 liters per 100 kilometers (23.29 US mpg), corresponding to 235 grams CO2 per kilometer (378.20 g/mile). The COD system plays a key role here, too. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a technology that is also used in the A8 4.0 TFSI quattro, the A8 L W12 quattro and the A8 hybrid, uses precise antiphase noise to compensate for intrusive noise in the cabin while operating on four cylinders while active engine mounts dampen vibration. The chassis and many body details reflect the sporty positioning of the S8.

The Audi A8 hybrid combines a 2.0 TFSI and electric motor to produce a system output of 180 kW (245 hp) and system torque of 480 Nm (354.03 lb-ft). The engine's power flows to the front wheels via a modified tiptronic. The lithium-ion battery in the rear enables purely electric driving at up to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) with a range of roughly three kilometers (1.86 miles). The A8 hybrid consumes on average just 6.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (147 grams CO2 per kilometer [37.34 US mpg/236.57 g/mile]).

The new A8 comes standard with a fast and smooth-shifting, eight-speed tiptronic. The electronically controlled automatic transmission is paired with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Audi also offers an optional sport differential for the rear axle, which distributes the power between the rear wheels as needed. The sport differential is standard in the S8 and the A8 4.2 TDI clean diesel quattro.

The sedan owes its sporty character in large part to the sophisticated chassis. The Audi drive select system, which varies the function of various technology modules, is standard. It also controls the adaptive air suspension with adaptive damping. Audi offers the air suspension with a sporty setup upon request. The power steering uses an efficient electromechanical drive. Dynamic steering, which varies boost as a function of the speed driven, is available as an option. Carbon fiber ceramic brake discs are available for V8 models and the A8 L W12 quattro.

Another option is for 9 J x 20 aluminum-technology wheels which are based on forged support wheels. A special process joins the support wheel to a ten-spoke design element of high-strength polymer.

Hand-built character: The interior of the Audi A8
The interior of the Audi flagship dazzles with its elegant lines and generous spaciousness. Options for the front seats include ventilation and massage. Electrically adjustable, individual rear seats are available as an option for the A8 and the A8 L. The A8 L is also available with a continuous, leather-covered center console. The first-class solution here is the relaxation seat with power footrest. A large number of additional features are also available, from four-zone automatic air conditioning and power-assisted closing to a cooler.

All components in the new A8 have been carefully chosen and processed with the utmost precision. Each of the lovingly executed details documents the hand-built character of the interior. A new range of choices for seat coverings, inlays and colors is available in many areas. New additions include the woods Fine grain poplar brown-silver and Fine grain ash brown-gold natural as well as the leather Unikat, which is particularly natural-looking, soft and breathable.

The Audi design selection offers a preselection of exclusive materials and colors for the interior, including sycamore gray/marble gray. The design selection black/vermont brown with Carbon twill copper inlays is available for the Audi S8. The Audi exclusive range offers additional individualization options for particularly discerning customers.

As is typical for Audi, the new A8 features exemplarily clear controls despite the abundance of functions. Taking center stage is the MMI control element on the tunnel's center console. MMI navigation plus also includes a touchpad. The driver draws characters on the pad (MMI touch) to control numerous navigation and multimedia functions.

For more composed driving: the assistance systems
Driving is even more composed with the optional assistance systems. The adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function is coupled with an expanded version of the standard Audi pre sense basic safety system. The same applies to Audi side assist. New in the A8 are Audi active lane assist, which makes slight steering adjustments when necessary, and the park assist system with 360° display, which handles steering when parking. The head-up display, which is also new, projects important data in the driver's field of vision on the windshield. The night vision assistant can now also recognize larger animals in addition to pedestrians.

Audi connect including car phone is available as a supplement to MMI navigation plus. It uses an integrated UMTS module to connect the new A8 to the Internet. Passengers can surf and e-mail freely via a WLAN hotspot. For the driver, the system delivers the tailored online services from Audi connect to the car, such as online traffic information, Google Earth, Google Street View and online news. The multimedia highlight is the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. The Rear Seat Entertainment system includes two displays, Bluetooth headphones and a DVD player.

The new Audi A8 is scheduled to arrive at German dealerships in November. Despite the upgraded trim level (standard LED headlights in all V8 models) and the powerful engines, prices are changing only slightly. Prices in Germany for the new Audi model start at 74,500 euros.

So what was all the hype about? Besides trying to steal the S-Class' thunder?
Headlights look less elegant. Never noticed before, but why are there toupees on every headrest? Also, are those speakers on the inside of each door handle? How many times will someone/some kid scrape their fingernails on the speaker grate?
Interior materials do look amazing, though, and look improved and upgraded over the current model.
Overall, a great, great car and a phenomenal interior wrapped in a really uninteresting body.

no hype, just absolute sophistication. The Audi A8 is the creme de la creme. The S class is a great car, design wise the Audi A8 is better IMO. Just look at the inerior design.

I think you would be suited to buy the BORING "Buick" interior looking Benz. Have you checked out that UGLY steering wheel and massive dash in it. Come On; that looks like by father's old Buick steering wheel they have in there now.

Meh, Audi marketing created a lot of hype for some new headlights..in my opinion this is the most visually boring car in its class.

once again, Audi = form and function and minimalism, it is all very well thought out. Bottom line, Germans are stellar at design, period.

I still think Audi sedans should be called S,M,L. The interior is great, love the cinnamon color. It's still no s-class. There is a statement that the s-class makes that can't be duplicated. The s-class has the ability to look strong as a brick but still soft and sophisticated. The exterior of the A8 is just dull. I will say the A8 looks modern and sophisticated but it's not the creme de la creme. That title belongs to the s-class. *awaiting audi fan boys to post where the A8 wins a test*

splitting hairs. I agree the S class has pedigree for sure and can easily be considered top German sedan, A8 close 2nd :)

llaroo: In the past three years the Audi A8 was the best German sedan in its class ahead of the Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 series -- in its gasoline (even W12), diesel and hybrid variants. This was verified by the top three German car magazines Autobild, Auto Motor und Sport and Autozeitung (which happen to be Europe's largest car mags).

When this generation Audi A8 was launched in 2010, the top German car mags -- in their 2010 and 2011 comparison tests -- all consistently rated the new Audi A8 as best in its class ahead of the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series. Here are the test results (it's in German, so use a translator like Google Translate if needed)...

But American car magazines were unable to compare the current A8 against the the S-Class in the past three years -- because Mercedes USA refused to supply S-Class cars for their comparo tests. In an May 2011 comparo (where the S-Class was absent), Car and Driver tried to cover up for Mercedes: "Mercedes-Benz ought to be here with its S-class, long the preferred shipping container for dictators and divas alike. But the current model is counting down the months to retirement, and the new one isn’t ready for C/D comparison testing, so the company requested that we proceed without it." That was May 2011 -- yet 2.5 years later -- that 'outgoing' S-Class is probably being sold by Mercedes this August... as sales of the new S-Class will probably begin only next month. Mercedes USA basically hid its S-Class for three years from being evaluated and losing to the Audi A8 since 2011! At least BMW USA had the courage to submit its 7 Series to be compared against the A8.

It’s naive and hypocritical to point fingers at Audi drumming up “hype” to “steal the S-Class' thunder”. What do you think Mercedes was doing when it facelifted the current generation S-Class for the 2010 model year – just as this current Audi A8 was unveiled in November 2009 and went on sale in 2010. Furthermore, Mercedes USA refused, in 2011, to supply American car mags with S-Class cars for comparison tests with the new A8 (Mercedes claimed in 2011 that its cars were nearing the end of life -- even though the S-Class had another 2.5 years of life before being replaced in August 2013).

People who actually understand automotive design and have good taste tend to like this generation Audi A8's design. This A8 won the prestigious 2010 EyesOn Design Award for Design Excellence. The EyesOn Design jury consists of a group of 19 top design executives from automotive manufacturers and by academics from transportation design programs led by three chief judges (Jack Telnack, former global vice president of design for Ford; Willie Davidson, Harley-Davidson’s executive vice president and chief styling officer; and Tom Matano, executive director of industrial design at Academy of Art University in San Francisco). No wonder the Robb Report -- a lifestyle magazine of the rich -- has described the Audi A8 and S8, as having "artful design" and "statelier stance".
http://tinyurl.com/msox3k7
http://tinyurl.com/m6cy94z

Audi sharpened and futurized the look of its A8 and S8 flagships with smart, clean and tasteful design changes in key areas. News reports have mostly been positive about the A8's design revisions, including its headlights and tailights (which were often the most written-about feature). "A8 design changes include a more expressive grille and more sculptured hood. The lower edge of the headlights is straighter than before. Overall, the car's front end looks a little more aggressive, a bit meaner perhaps." said Detroit's Autoweek.

Line up the facelifted Audi A8, new Mercedes S-Class and facelifted BMW 7 Series in front of rich people (see photos in links). $100,000 plus luxury sedan buyers are typically relatively conservative in their tastes. Understatement is attractive to many rich people who appreciate a car with classic elegance, polish and stateliness over a car that's adorned to seek attention. The facelifted A8's tasteful design revisions puts its exterior styling on par with the S-Class -- whether rich car buyers prefer the look of one car over the other car will depend on their personal taste. Next to both cars, the BMW 7 Series now looks outdated.
http://tinyurl.com/mmyscg3
http://tinyurl.com/n6ekma9
http://tinyurl.com/lvb8eor
http://tinyurl.com/k53sr3z

Yet the A8 does have a trump card that will grab attention when it is next to an S-Class: the A8's futuristic, striking headlights are more dazzling and captivating than the S-Class' headlights (its design looks like an evolution of what was on the 2007 A5 and 2009 A8).

"Audi's toxic challenge to the S-Class. The grille has become smaller, the lights are probably the best on the market. The designers from Ingolstadt have not changed, but the new flagship looks more elegant." declares Die Welt (Germany's largest conservative newspaper). "(The A8's) sharper design should halt the competition. Especially in the front area the Audi A8's facelift has even more striking design with the large one-piece grille than its predecessor" declared Bild (Germany's largest newspaper and the world's sixth largest selling newspaper). "The new Audi A8 on the attack" declared Autobild (Germany and Europe's largest car mag). "Flagship is sharpened" declares Autor Motor und Sport (Germany and Euirope's second largest car mag). "A thorough facelift with customized design and technology" declares Autozeitung (third largest German car mag and larger than any British car mag).

I showed before that the pre-facelifted A8 was the best car in its class in German comparison tests (A8, S-Class and 7-Series) since 2010 – in 2011 Mercedes USA was too chicken to supply S-Class cars to be assessed against the A8 after losing every German test in 2011.

And now Audi has improved the A8 further by giving it more engine power (yet less fuel consumption), more luxury, more driver assistance systems, more trunk space, more noise damping. The A8 L gains an additional 5.12 inches (13 cm) in both length and wheelbase.

The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI has a curb weight of just 1,830 kilograms (4,034.46 lb) -– best in class for models with all-wheel drive. The Audi A8 3.0 TFSI is 125 KG (275 lbs) lighter than the Mercedes S 350 Bluetec (rear-wheel drive).... and it is 220 KG (485 lbs) lighter than an S 500 4Matic (all-wheel drive). The Audi's aluminum ‘Space Frame' design body "weighs in at just 231kg... as such, it should help make the engine tweaks that much more acute" said Top Gear.

Audi's A8 interiors have long been the industry standard that others have tried to emulate and copy. For example, these links show just one of many possible interior combinations (physical components, seat coverings, wood/aluminum etc inlays, colors) that could have been created -- in a 2010 or 2011 A8. Those who have been paying attention would realize that Audi made minor refinements and changes (mostly to a few physical aspects like controls) to an already excellent interior that existed before the facelift.

Audi is the first car company to use Bang & Olufsen sound systems, before Mercedes and BMW did. B&O has been in two generations of A8 since 2005. If any of the 19 loudspeaker grilles or housing have been badly scratched, it would have shown up after over three years of use in this generation of A8. B&O parts are tested rigorously for durability.

I like vehicles that are more tweaked, slightly updated rather than some of these crazy designs the carmakers come up with. I had a BMW before I purchased my Audi 6er (which is awesome). I liked my OLDER BMW but too many stupid things they've changed made me look elsewhere now.

To begin with, get rid of the crappy run flat tires; give me a full spare; stop trying to pander your once legendary vehicles to a "wider" audience. The 5er use to be king and now they've changed the ride so Cadillac owners can appreciate. If a potential buyer doesn't want the true sport sedan performance the 5er was once known for, they should look elsewhere.

Let me know when BMW gets back to that winning ride performance formula.

llaroo: You feel like you're an 'Audi lover' because on this site posters who write logical and factual comments about Audi are quite rare. The majority of posters/users here are BMW and Mercedes lovers as well as posters who are leaning towards those brands based on outdated beliefs -- a few of them are irrationally voting down or criticizing your posts because it's too positive for Audi at the expense of their Mercedes or BMW cars. If you criticize Audi, you'll get a lot of votes.

Outdated beliefs? You would like people to believe that. The e63 Amg s just beat the RS6 is an autobild test, and is the second test an Amg Mercedes beat the RS6... Well mabe third if you count Chris Harris. He said the rs6 was objectively better than the RWD mercedes, but preferred driving the AMG. The A45 Amg just beat the S3 and m135 in an autobild test. Plus the M3 just beat the Rs5 and C63 in a sportauto test, and the new 4 series just beat the S5 and e class coupe in an autobild test. So clearly your selective posting only tells the audi fanboy half of the story.

.... otherwise, if this were the appropriate blog, I'd start with Top Gear's comments on the $300,000 Mercedes SLS Black coupe versus the Audi RS6 wagon on real world roads of German streets, autobahns and across te Alps: "But you know what? The SLS had to work hard every step of the journey to keep pace with the RS6. The Audi, wtin-turbocharged and impossibly muscular, blitzes gaps in traffic and does so with minimal effort. In the SLS, you have to be more alert: you can't just slam on the pedal and spear the horizom -- you need to think about gears and tractionand camber and surface and DRIVING the thing. It's immersive and demanding in a way that the RS6 just isn't. In the Audi, once you've mastered mirror, signal, manoeuvre, you don't need to know much more. The car takes care of everything, support you in a quattro cradle, distanced from the actual goings -- on layers of insulation and beefy servos. Let's leave it at this. In the real world, both accumulate speed with near equal alarcrity, the Audi's torque surplus offsetting the Merc's power and weight advantages, its brotherly arm around your shoulders a genuine comfort on hairy passes that entirely missing from the blood-and-thunder Mercedes. The Audi makes speed feel safe; the Mercedes reslishes the danger. We saw 175 mph in both. In the Audi, it was a nonchalant act, done while I was discussing picture requirements with photographer Don Romney... in the SLS, I don't remember breathing.... No one fears the Audi. People get in it and go fast straight away. I bet plenty of people are going faster round the CHarade in the RS6 than anything else. I also bet some of them have outbraked themselves once or twice in the process, faintly shocked at just how effective the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 is at heaping speed on. Fortunately, our RS6 has ceramic stoppers... once you've giggled at how hot and smoky the brakes get, marvelled at the traction out of slow corners, the force-of-nature acceleration and the machine-gun rat-a-tatta-tatta as the engine clatters into the rev-limiter and the exhaust bellows its protest, you have its measure."

I was right on target... *Audi fan boys posting a barrage of audi articles about how great the A8 is* Fact is mercedes fans could do the same but boast about the 50+ years worth or articles they would have to sort through describing the inventions and innovations of mercedes in particular the s-class has made to the auto industry. For the most part no one cares about compro test. It's us fan boys who like to go back in forth about various test. Thats all fun and great and expected. But most of all thats all subjective. You know what's not subjective numbers. You posted earlier if you put all of the cars together in front of buyers which would they take. I'll answer that The s-class first, the 7 second, audi 3rd. Well at least that what the WORLDWIDE sales figures say. And before you post your fav. article how the A8's sales in Germany for a couple monthy. Answer this one question in what year if ever has the A8 ever outsold the S-class or even the 7 series in WORLDWIDE sales. If never, I would say the A8 still isn't quite there yet?

Listen Mercedes fanboy, this is irrational: "Answer this one question in what year if ever has the A8 ever outsold the S-class or even the 7 series in WORLDWIDE sales. If never, I would say the A8 still isn't quite there yet?"

It's like you saying the Mercedes SLK is "there already" because it outsells the Porsche Boxster in worldwide sales. How silly is that?

Next, you couldn't even get the correct number of overweight and inferior Mercedes S Class cars sold globally in 2012 after parroting your tired boast about worldwide sales (your incorrect figures were actually the number of BMW 7 Series cars sold, NOT the numbers of S-Class cars sold -- even though I had taught you the correct figures in an earlier blog).

Bottom line, it's very significant to find out what cars the Germans are buying. Fact is, no one else knows more about these German luxury cars than the Germans themselves. The Germans are the best at building, driving, testing and understanding their own luxury sports cars. The Germans knew that the Audi A8 beat the Mercedes S Class in virtually every German car mag test between 2010 to 2012.

No wonder the Germans bought more Audi A8 cars (14,831) than they bought Mercedes S-Class cars (14,592) in the last 3.5 years in Germany, particularly in the last 1.5 years based on statistics from the German Federal Transport Authority (KBA). What the Germans have realized is that, in recent years, the Audi A8 is a better car than the Mercedes S-Class. The Germans who bought the A8 made rational choices to choose the best car for their satisfaction.

Here are the KBA stats on new passenger car registrations in Germany:
- 2013 (Jan to July): Audi A8 was 1,676 vs Mercedes S Class was 1,381
- 2012: Audi A8 was 3,675 vs Mercedes S Class was 3,304
- 2011: Audi A8 was 4,728 vs Mercedes S Class was 4,730
- 2010: Audi A8 was 4,752 vs Mercedes S Class was 5,177

If the rest of the world was as smart and as rational as the Germans, they would have said to themselves: "If the Germans bought more Audi A8 cars than Mercedes S-Class cars, then maybe I should buy the Audi as well."

But in the rest of the world, many S-Class buyers did not buy the best car.... they bought the S-Class because they were irrationally hoping to 'buy the illusion of status' to impress other people (as Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman explained in the link). On the other hand, Audi A8 buyers made the rational choice to buy their car for themselves (not to impress others), so they bought the best possible car. Thus many Mercedes buyers tend to be making irrationally choices while Audi buyers tend to be making rational choices. It's unfortunate that there so many shallow and insecure people who are buying the S-Class for the illusion of status, but that's life.

The first Mercedes S-Class came into existence only in 1972.

The first Mercedes-Benz brand car was sold only in 1926 (following the merger of Daimler and Benz companies).

Audi as a brand has been around since 1909.

Answer the question sir. In WORLDWIDE sales what year has the A8 ever sold more cars than the S-class? Lets stay on topic deal with the question at hand regarding the premium luxury sedan. Everyone knows the answer but I want to see if you have the gull to admit it. Here it goes... NEVER. The A8 was the newest least expensive car in it's seg but still managed to sell the least amount of cars. That has got to be a huge blow to AUDI. Better luck next time trying to conquor the S-class. The new one is here now so get used to 3rd in the sales race.

You picked Germany for YTD sales lets look at a more important sales market for large luxury sedans. The USA. Audi A8 YTD sales - July 13 3,551. Mercedes S-class YTD sales - July 13 6,788. There you have it in a much more important market for large luxury sedans the A8 was almost outsold 2 to 1 to the oldest model S-class that due for replacement in about 2 months. Sucks to suck.

merc07: Here is why S-Class sales numbers in USA are questionable: Mercedes buyers were uninformed buyers. They were kept uninformed that, during the past 3 years (including this year), the S-Class was an inferior car compared to this gen’s Audi A8.

Had Americans known that the Mercedes S-Class was inferior to the Audi A8 in the past last 3 years... Americans would not have bought so many S-Class cars. Americans were kept in the dark about the inferiority of its S-Class because for 3 years Mercedes refused to send S-Class cars to take part in American car mag comparison tests involving the A8. The only question is -- was Mercedes USA too sacred to lose American comparo tests after the facelifted S-Class was beaten several times by the A8... or did Mercedes USA hide the S-Class from these comparison tests so that Americans won't find out that the S-Class was inferior to the A8?

- Mercedes USA knew that the newly-facelifted S-Class lost the comparison tests to the Audi A8. In the past three years the Audi A8 was the best German sedan in its class -- better than Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 series -- in gasoline (even W12), diesel and hybrid variants. The top three German car magazines Autobild, Auto Motor und Sport and Autozeitung (which happen to be Europe's largest car mags) in their 2010 to 2012 comparison tests all consistently rated this gen's Audi A8 as best in its class. Here are the test results:

http://tinyurl.com/ptyqk7s
http://tinyurl.com/mrrycmp
http://tinyurl.com/ngj7bo4
http://tinyurl.com/oc282pv
http://tinyurl.com/otv2tba

- Mercedes USA refused to supply S-Class cars for American car mag comparo tests. Thus American car mags were unable to compare the current A8 against the S-Class during the past three years. In a May 2011 comparo (where the S-Class was absent), Car and Driver mag tried to cover up for Mercedes: "Mercedes-Benz ought to be here with its S-class, long the preferred shipping container for dictators and divas alike. But the current model is counting down the months to retirement, and the new one isn’t ready for C/D comparison testing, so the company requested that we proceed without it." That was May 2011 (just months after the facelifted S Class was sold) -- yet 2.5 years later -- that 'soon to be retiring' S-Class is still sold by Mercedes USA even this month August 2013... as sales of the new S-Class will probably begin only next month.
http://tinyurl.com/87x9uxm

- Mercedes USA basically hid its S-Class for 3 years from being evaluated and losing to the Audi A8 since 2011! At least BMW USA had the courage and honesty to submit its 7 Series to be compared against the A8.

[In any case, the USA isn't the biggest market for these full-size luxury cars]

merc07: "Desperate are we to talk about sound systems. Because your all knowing you will know that Mercedes ditched B&O. They now use Burmester in their high end cars"

Don't you know that Mercedes Germany is selling the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG for 7.080,50 Euro in their high-end car the SLS roadster??? And it's not just in the high-end cars!!!

Is the switch to Burmester to increase profit margins from American customers?

Btw, I obviously talked about the B&O sound system because some poster's comment "are those speakers on the inside of each door handle? How many times will someone/some kid scrape their fingernails on the speaker grate?" scared the dead crap out of me.

Not only are you in denial (to distract people from the reality that even the informed and rational Germans prefer the Audi A8 over the S-Class)...

... but worse you are disingenuous and simply dishonest. You even have the gall to pretend that I "never" "admit it".

Now I'm going to provide the evidence to back up what I said.

"Everyone" (including you) did not know the worldwide sales figures for the A8, S-Class and 7-Series until I informed you and them of the actual numbers supported with links. I did this in at least the following two blog threads. In the second blog you were trying to pull a fast one by using my numbers from the first blog, but you even managed to confuse yourself and it backfired on you.

I don't know what you do before you post, but it isn't research. Unless your "research" consists of referring to the facts I've provided, lol.

Wait a minute... didn't some of your research come from dubious websites such as "extremetech.com" and "automotive.com"... yes it did! Go to my post with "You conclude that "The s-class is effortlessly superior" because automotive.com and extremetech.com gave their thumbs up."
http://www.autospies.com/news/New-Audi-A8-Teased-Will-Have-New-LED-Headlight-System-77587/

Yeah, "get used to 3rd in the sales race." What's a colossal blow to Mercedes is that Mercedes is third largest luxury car maker in the world -- well behind Audi. And Mercedes isn't as profitable as Audi.

At least attempt to be honest.

In the UK and in Europe the Audi A8 costs exactly as much as the S-Class and more when options are added.

Mercedes offer such ludicrously Cheap Lease Deals that damn near every other new car on London streets is a merc.

Example E-Class Coupe/Conv is cheaper on a 3 yr lease than an A5 Conv or even an A4 Sedan.

Obviously S Class just been released so for the next 24 months it will probably be priced higher than A8.

But go look, the CLS 350 CDI Sport is about £350 a month on a 3yr lease while the A6 3.0 TDI is at least £420.

Also, All MB lease deals are available for personal lease while most Audi deals are Business Lease only (In the UK at least).

We Americans are used to being kept in the dark about how great Audi's can be. Lets not forget that the American journalists "forgot" to compare the B8 A4 2.0T to the E90 328i as well. People seem to have trouble understanding that 50 years of greatness doesn't equate to current products being the best, just look at the current state of the "Ultimate Driving Machine"...

This is what I love about Satriani's posts: Any article showing that Audi won a comparo or lead in sales is basically certifiable and undeniably true and valid. Any article showing an Audi lost or where Audi didn't sell as many units, the results are questionable, suspicious, etc.

And that's only from me reading very small bits and pieces of his drivel while trying to get past the Rainman-like posts (we can crown him Audiman as I'm sure he's crowned himself).

1. He believes that his personal opinions on cars are basically certifiable and undeniably true and valid. What cidflekken says must be correct compared to my comparos from the world's most authoritative auto reviewers on German cars -- the biggest German car mags (duh).

2. He always claims he doesn't read my posts.... yet admits tidbits of my somehow magically seep into his brain, lol. And yet I can quote his hooey or mention his name in the middle of my posts -- and somehow he always knows it. It's not because he refuses to admit that he reads every word in my posts -- it's because he really has magic powers to detect these things :)

The funny thing about this thread is the fanatical zeal both parties have on their positions.

1- It makes absolute sense that the Germans who Conceive, Design, Test & Manufacture these vehicles would have an infinitely superior innate ability when it comes to choosing which vehicle is better amongst the 3/4 competing Manufacturers offerings. Hence if A8/A6/A4/Insert A whatever...... sales or reviews places them 1st in Germany then Audi is doing something right.

2- It is also possible that the needs/requirements of the North American buyer is different from those of the German/European hence why MB or BMW has better sales figures or reviews over there.

Example- From my personal experience i know my American Clients are more interested in the exterior features of a vehicle as they want others to appreciate the greatness of their vehicles hence the proliferation of Chrome Parts on the exterior of the vehicle while many Europeans opt for the Matt or Black Finish on these parts. {Middle Eastern and Asian buyers also prefer flashy over understated}

Here in the UK you can almost always tell the Continent of origin of a vehicles' owner based on the features on the car.
