I think they are secretly worried about it. They must realize that Tesla is going to expand its model range. The model S has potential to eat away sales from the premium manufacturers bread and butter models. The model X can do the same thing.

A Performance+ Model S is just as fast as the i8, may handle just as well if not better, has the same range, and is a whole lot more practical (seats 5-7, lower maintenance, will have carpool access for longer, best screen of any car). Oh, and it is less expensive than the i8. BMW should be worried. The new Tesla Roadster should be out in 2017 or 2018, but I don't think they'll need it.

While BMW looks in the rear view of it's EV supercar, would be 5, 6 and 7 series buyers are buying Tesla Model S cars.
