Why So Low? Detroit Ranks Below 32 Countries That Get Aide From The US

Thirty-two foreign countries receive more direct aid from the U.S. government than the city of Detroit. This is not to say that Iraq and Nigeria and Mexico don’t need foreign assistance or are undeserving of help from the United States. But when you look at the raw numbers, you start to wonder if some of that cash could be better served in Oakland and Baltimore instead of Karachi and Kabul.

The numbers here are for fiscal year 2014 budget and pulled from ForeignAssistance.gov, which provides data in an attempt to make the federal government more transparent. Foreign assistance is managed by the Department of State, USAID, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the Department of Defense and the Department of Treasury. It includes everything from economic development to education to “peace and security.” Somehow, foreign assistance only accounts for 1 percent of federal spending.

Why single out poor Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mexico, Pakistan?

Look at the biggest elephant in the room...

The US government gives Israel $3.1 BILLION or $3,100 million in 2013 (and another 3.1 Billion in 2014) according to foreignassistance.gov . But it's actually a several hundred million more than $3.1 billion once other assistance is added (e.g., $480 million in joint U.S.-Israeli missile defense programs, etc.).
http://foreignassistance.gov/OU.aspx?FY=2014&OUID=164&AgencyID=0&FromRGA=true&budTab=tab_Bud_Planned

The US has provided Israel with $233.7 billion in aid ?(after adjusting for inflation?) since 1948 through the end 2012. In nominal terms, total American aid was $112 billion over the years, according to U.S. Congress data.

Meanwhile, Detroit gets only $108 million.

Go figure.

what portion of the US military budget is essentially aid to Israel?

one could argue that just about every soldier and piece of military equipment in that region is off-the-books aid to israel.

MorePower,

are you suggesting that Satriani1 is one of those "anti-Zionist" conspiracy theorists?

The only people that are going to save Detroit, besides from the residents that still live there, is OCP and we already know how that is going to turn out.

Satriani is right, that's the big elephant that is career ending if discussed in a corporate or political environment. To stay on the topic of Detroit though, its a poster child for what may come next. Like Cyprus, someone has to be the beta site for what lies ahead.

There is a phrase: To know who is in power know who you are not allowed to criticize.

There is a more ancient phrase:

Have the balls to stand up and speak the facts... instead of cowering in fear... as long as what you speak is based on valid facts, sound logic and consistent principles. There is no greater power than 6 billion people who know the most relevant facts. It is ignorance that gives power to others.

Now it's time for me to analyze...

America is too busy spending money on defense, giving tax breaks to Corporations/the wealthy, and giving your tax dollars to billion dollar profit corporations to even care about Detroit.

The big aid to Israel keeps up what is a mutually highly beneficial alliance. Israel's R&D is pretty valuable from most angles if you look at how much good research comes out of there. It's also the US's only real point of control, so to speak, (and the only true democracy) in the region. The aid to Egypt is substantial as well, but given the current political turmoil and in particular the recent military coup there, the money is currently on hold as far as I know. Pakistan and Afghanistan... well the US has their way of doing things... effectively putting people on our payroll to incentivize cooperation. It's not sustainable but it is what it is; it's also probably not cost-effective but since when have our military ops been cost-effective anyway. All that said, I really am surprised that Detroit is allowed to rot the way it is. It is, in my opinion, shameful and probably quite costly in terms of unrealized revenue and loss of life or property due to the insanely slow police response and what-not. Aid to the city (and to other cities in similar states of distress) should be revisited.

One of the most interesting articles and set of responses I have seen on Autospies in a while.

But it is "AID," not "AIDE."
