Tesla Becomes The Third Best Selling Luxury Car In California

Tesla Motors Model S has quietly become the third-bestselling luxury car in California, trailing only the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW’s 5-Series.

Tesla has sold 4,714 of its Model S electric cars in the state during the first half of the year, according to the California New Car Dealers Assn. Only the Mercedes E-Class, with 6,582, and the BMW 5-Series, with 6,077, sold more.

Moreover, it looks like California accounts for about 50% of the Palo Alto car company’s total sales during the first half of this year.

Tesla sells its Model S sport sedan for prices starting at $63,570 and running to more than $100,000, with the largest battery and driving range.

I don't particularly care for Tesla, but competition is a good thing and will keep the Germans on their A game.

What are California's rebates and incentives for buying that Tesla?

Californians bought 12,659 Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series in the first half of 2013. Many of these luxury car buyers probably haven't done good research on the best luxury cars before spending their money.

Most luxury car buyers don't care about "research" and care about "appearances". How will I look when I drive up to the country club in an MB vs. BMW vs. Audi? What will my co-workers think? Will I pick up more girls?

Lexus was the best-selling luxury marque in the U.S. for eleven consecutive years until 2011. Are you saying that during those 11 straight years American luxury car buyers felt that by driving a Lexus (instead of BMW or MB) they could pick up more girls, impress their co-workers and impress their country club members?
