Porsche is a brand built on tradition and pride. And I think it's safe to say that the 911 is the cornerstone of the marque. Sure it's selling tons of Cayennes and Panameras but the 911 is an icon.
Unfortunately, that icon became overshadowed when the Nissan GT-R made its blockbuster debut in 2008. And over the years it's become more powerful and more focused. Refined it is not.
When the GT-R set its Nurburgring lap time you could tell that the Germans were sporting a bit of a black eye as they quibbled over things like tires and whatnot. But with its all-new 911 (991) Turbo S, I don't think they'll need to have to get down and dirty with such politics.
Now armed with 552 horsepower and likely the best tuning to come out of Stuttgart, Autocar's Steve Stucliffe gets behind the wheel to give us a quick download on one of the best 911s ever created. It's clear Sutcliffe is staggered with its performance, which he says could possibly produce an obscenely fast 2.5 second or so zero to 60 mph time, but it's also the vehicle's refinement that seems to impress.
That said, will it be ENOUGH to ensure the 911 is the better pick while the GT-R exists? Well, that depends if you care about pricing.

The new 552bhp Porsche 911 Turbo S is supremely fast, but does that make it a brilliant supercar? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.
