DRIVEN + VIDEO: Jay Leno Gives The PRODUCTION 918 Spyder A Test At Quail
One vehicle we've been watch develop over the past two years has been the Porsche 918. Though I can hardly tell the different since its first iteration, the company has finalized the production variant, which we got the first chance to scope out at this year's Monterey Weekend. To be specific, at the Quail Lodge.

Though Jay Leno takes a few minutes to go over the 918's finer details, it's clear how complex this vehicle is very quickly. There are two places to fuel up — driver's side is petrol, passenger side is electricity. There are two electric motors — one at the front and one at the back. The 918 can be driven in a variety of modes — electric, hybrid, race.

It's remarkable to see how far automobiles have come, particularly if you just watched that 356 cilp in the previous post.

Leno doesn't exactly get the chance to "let 'er rip," but for a quick first drive there are some initial impressions.

That said, what are your main takeaways from this brief drive.

Frank Walliser walks Jay through the new super sports hybrid that Porsche says will act as the "gene pool" for its sports cars of the future.

So much respect for this car and its engineers. I didn't like the idea of a hybrid supercar but because they were able to keep it at 3200 lbs, it changed everything. Looks very nice.

Yeah.

3,200 pounds is not all that bad with the plethora of equipment.

Frank's math is off; 1634KG = 3602lbs. Umm, oops.

Too bad he can't actually accelerate since he is following a camera car. Looking forward to more.
